I am looking for an opaque (not see through) silk that has a very shiny sheen to it.
Anyone know where I can find a few of these? Thank You! What I am looking for is a cloth just like a zombie foulard, but smaller. (thicker than a see thru silk, opaque, solid color.) It seems like it would be easy to find one but....

Tony,
Go to a decent fabric shop and you will find ezactly what you are after - if you are unsure it sounds like some sort of taffeta would do well. Probably cost you a couple of bucks for half a yard or so and you can pick from a really wide range of colours. Depending on the finish you want you can either hand hem it yourself, get someone to hem it with a machine or by iron on hemming tape! This will be a lot cheaper than anything you buy from a magic suppliers and allows you the flexibility to co-ordinate your colours for a full routine, ie... you could match the colour to a silk or other prop. Hope this helps! Kaz |

Thanks Kaz!
It never even entered my mind to try a fabric shop.

Here's a thought.
I've found a site in California that sells 8mm (a little heavier than dealer-purchased "magic" silks) Habotai 11 inch square hankies for 45 cents each! These are usually sold to artists. YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE, if you need a large production where compressability is not an issue. They sell a lighter (5mm) called "Paj" by the yard (for $3 something) if you can get things cut and hemmed. THESE COME IN WHITE ONLY, but can be dyed with grocery-store bought Rit (TM) dye. If you buy the three primary colors, you can combine colors, and come up with a rainbow of color. SAVE A LOT OF THESE

Hey Tony: Here in NJ we have a fabric store chain called The Rag Shop. They all have several tables of left over material at a cheaper price. I've found material for my Zombie, dove productions and table covers and many other things.

Here is a great idea, which you might try someday. In the past couple years I visited Korea and Italy. Each country had absolutely beautiful silks, with almost anything you could want on it, at ridiculous prices - like $5 U.S. for a 36" pure silk scarf. I bought a number of them in each country.
The cost of the trip, obviously, is the downside. But anyone who wants to be in "silk heaven" and gets a chance to travel will be amazed at the quality and prices at the street vendors in these countries. I suspect a number of other countries would have similar products. I mentioned at the time that a person could go to these countries, buy a number of silks that would be popular with magicians, sell them on the internet at double the price and still be a hero to those buying. quack |

Tony, a great place to go would be The Men's Warehouse. They have all kinds of silks for tuxedos and suits. I purchased a nice opaque blue silk. Perfect shine and feel to it. Hope this helps.

Brian, I checked out The Men's Wearhouse and they had exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for the tip!
If any one else is interested they sell 100% silk hanks or "pocket squares" for around $7.00 Thanks again Brian!

I make and sell 8 and 6 momme silks. When I have to have it opaque I use two 8 momme silks sewn together. I have made Dale Salwak's zombie foulard this way and added a third black silk in between to make it 24MM total!! I have use only two layers for a 90" square with a logo to produce 6 CEO's behind it on stage. You just have to be sure that things are front lighted.
I can special order in up to about 12momme but usually doubling the silks works fine.

I have been looking for the same kind of opaque silks as well. I bought a few pocket squares that are very nice looking, but they ended up being too small for the David Roth coin and silk routines. I'm looking for several colors that are 15" to 18" square with rolled hems. Preferably not custom made. Any ideas?

Go to a high class department store or mens shop. You can find mens pocket hanks in all colors and designs. I use one on stage for coin production routine.
They are Opaque and very high quality and will last a life time. Sometimes we have to look beyond K-Mart and Wal-Mart. Bill |

Tony,
Try Burlington Coat Factory Outlets. They sell what you seek in many colors for $3.50/each. They are great covers but bad news in a silk rouine. Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |
