There are some wonderful magicians out there, but not all of them are great teachers of magic. Who is your favourite and why. Personally I think that Michael Ammar is as good as I've seen, both in person and on tape and D.V.D. He explains his effects in great detail with such a personable attitude, that it is almost impossible not to like the guy. Be interested to hear your choices.

I was lucky enough to have the chance to meet Mr. Ammar recently at a lecture. It was great to see that he was just as nice in person as on tape. There was no rush to stop answering questions from the audience, either.

I think Ammar is a good teacher but he's kinda boring. Oz Pearlman is a good teacher even though hes with penguin. He explains everything in detail. I haven't seen too many other magicians perform since I mostly have books.
But if it wasn't limited to magic, De'vo should be one of the best. |

I agree, Michael Ammar is great. Just about all that L and L does is good. Jeff McBride is great (also L and L- I think). Dean Dill is fabulous, in person, and doesn't just teach you the moves, but everything that goes into each move, and why you are doing them... but I don't have his DVDs/videos, but again, I bet those are great.
I too saw Ammar, at a lecture at the Castle in November, and he was great in person too.

Love Tommy Wonder and Daryl. Ammar is a well of knowledge too and such a nice guy. The Vernon tapes are amazing...listening to stories and stuff of how magic started basically.

Apollo Robbins because he explains it very clearly from all angles,
Andrew Mayne because he goes into very fine detail and gives other alternatives to achieve the effect, Dan Sylvester because he explains the how the effects thoroughly and work and why they work well, David Stone because he is never boring, David Roth because although he is sometimes boring he really knows what he's doing and he simplifies things without removing the great impact of the effect and De'vo because although he never speaks he does a very good job on teaching.

Teachers do more than give students effects and moves in magic they also inspire and often take an unpopular view of things in magic and entertainment. Some try to make magic change for the better…
In this point of view I would pick Dai Vernon for the Vernon Touch In Genii Magazine... Charlie Miller for his writings in the same magazine. Also Harry Stanley for the Gen... And Steve Brooks for the Café... Giving magicians a living magazine and a voice of a lot of great writing from many different teachers...

Would have to vote for Harry Lorayne, very detail oriented. He is a very fast talker though but a wealth of information.

I have never seen Ammar live but his DVD's are just great. He explains every detail that you need to know about the card trick that he performs. He's got a great personality and it can feel as if he is really there helping and teaching you. My vote is for Ammar. Honorable mentions to Daryl, Sankey, and Lorayne.

I'm comfortable with Daryl and Ammar on DVD and Giobbi in text. Nice and easy going. Can't listen to Sankey - does my head in - sorry.

Pat Page is a very good explainer. Ken Brooke was, as well. Lewis Ganson was very bad at describing moves, but he made up for it in his photography.
I would give Oz Perlman more credibility if I knew that he had the depth of knowledge that Michael Ammar has. As far as teaching on video is concerned, Ammar still is the best at explaining that I have seen. And I know he works under fire. Some may find his teaching boring, but my question would be, do you want excitement or do you want to learn?

I second Kelley on Ammar and Daryl on DVD. I would add McBride, I have trouble getting the hang of Rubinstein on DVD but I still would like to learn from any of them in person.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.
