I have been working with the Flipper coin (Swadling Coin) for years and use a product called tack pads to hold mine together. It is twice as tacky as double stick tape, holds VERY well and cleans up easily. No solvents, screw drivers or nail files needed when the coin needs maintenance. Just soak the coin in hot water and use your thumbnail to separate the parts. Tack pads are available in squares, strips and sheets. I use the strips when attaching them to the coin. The squares are $2.25 for a pad of 25 half inch squares and the stripes are $3.00 for a package of 5 three inch by half an inch stripes. From one strip I can cut 6 repair pads to fit the coin. Tack pads work better than anything else that I have ever tried and I have tried just about everything.
At the beginning of this post I mentioned the "Swadling coin" after Flipper coin. It is because I believe Bob Swadling from England created the coin. I am not 100% sure of this but I was told by a few magicians that were sure. If you have any history on the origin of the Flipper coin please let me know. Take care and take cards, Antony Gerard |

Antony,
It was a writing of Wesley James that brought it to light to the public that the "Flipper Coin" was created by Bob Swadling. Randy Wakeman posted Wesley's essay HERE at the Café. Although it is suggested that the "Flipper coin" should be called a "Swadling Coin," I have been informed that Bob prefers that it not be called such, unless it is actually one of the coins manufactured personally by him. So the generic "Flipper Coin" applies to all other coins of this type not specifically manufactured by Mr. Swadling. |

Dan, did you read:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/searc......=3845759 Eddy Taytelbaum, who is an old friend, did confirm to me, in several emails recently, what's mentioned in the above URL. It was already created in the early 1960s, by Phil Postma, after the raw idea was published by Eddy in *The Gen*, probably in the late 1950s! (I have a copy of that *Gen* stuffed away somewhere .) Actually I have one of those earlier flippers made by Eddy, got it in the early 1960's..

Such is why I proposed the simpler expression "[~" so we can drop the name association with the gaff till we have some better records made public in our community and the dust settles.
Bob's coin is part of his Double Deception product. I don't recall seeing Eddy's coin advertised, so no idea what he calls it.
...to all the coins I've dropped here

I actually wondered too, the subject wasn't discussed further.
I'll snip in here an unedited responce from Eddy, dated: Tue, 19 Oct 2004, when I brought to his attention, that the matter of the flipper was discussed here. I didn't ask Eddy for approval to post this, but I'm sure he wouldn't mind. *********************************************************** Dear Werner; Thanks for your most welcome letter. The most welcome letter i received in forty years. No, I have not forgotten you, how could I. I remember always looking for you when I was at a convention and I believe you did the same. No matter how you turn it around, I am still 15 years older then you. I remember everything you wrote in your letter and this brings back fond memories. This letteer may not be a very long one but you"ll hear more from me. What I am most glad about is that you remember me doing en making the flipper coin for you. My friend postma who made the impromevement died yesterday and I was just involved to tell the whole world about him and his improvement of my flipper coin. Swadling is claiming it as his. Luckily I published this years ago in the Gen. I'll send you the letter I wrote to Mats Kelstrom and likewise I'll send your letter to him because I told him that the crude version was my idea. I remember everyone was flabbergasted when I did it first. Let have your postal address en telephone number when you reply. This won"t be the last letter I am writing to you. Magically yours Eddy ***********************************************************

Werner G. Seitz recommended above using Scotch Permanent D-S tape #467 or #950. The only Scotch Permanent D-S tape I found have a 40 on each roll and a second number: 34-8507-8235-9. Both in tiny numerals. Can anyone say if this is as good for the stated purpose? Where on the roll or box were Werner's numbers printed? Thanks

One of the rolls I have (no box on either of them), the Scotch No. 467, has these numbers printed on the protection paper all the way around. The other doesn't have any printing, Scotch did mark it on the inside of the roll with the no. 950, by use of a speed-marker. As mentioned, both might well be obsolete by now, I would suggest to contact the local branch of 'Scotch' by email, asking if these are still available..they are usually very helpfull re inquieries.. Good luck..I know both of these 2 tapes work very well, I don't know the one you mentioned, but maybe you can simply get a smal sample from an officestore and try it out. Jaxon got a sample from me, but I suppose he not yet tried it out. Could be interesting to hear his opinion how it works for him..

I tried the tape out that Werner sent me (Thanks very much for that). It works great for most flipper work but for my routine I'll stick with the glue. The only reason I say that is in my routine the coin is dropped on the table (by spectators). Doing this a number of times in one night really pushes the bond to it's limit.
So unless you drop your coins on the table a lot his tape is great. Ron Jaxon |

Hi Ron,
Try using the tack pads as supplied in "Card A-Tack". I have dropped the Flipper coin on glass, wood and Plexiglas tables and it stays together every time. It's inexpensive, clean, has an extremely high tack and very durable. If you have run out of the tack pads, I just got a new supply in at the Timid Rabbit. They are only $2.25 for five of the three-inch by half-inch stripes and you can cut six to eight pieces to fit a fifty-cent Flipper. Take care and take cards, Antony Gerard |

I don't know the source where to get the replacement stickers you metnioned, can you mention the name of the brand/the maunfactorer and the 'type'-no. of the stuff, any info is welcome? What you mentioned, I think isn't known here in Europe. I'm always interested in trying out ány new stuff recommended, nevertheless I'm convinced it doesn't stick, is more practical- better then what I already use, but it surely would be worth a try..

Hello Werner
Tack pads are not glue. They are gelatinous adhesive pads that were originally used in the medical field. The only magicians in Europa that have used tack pads so far are a group from England that I met earlier this month. The "Card A-Tack" that I refered to in my last post is a book with four routines and 105 additional ideas using tack pads. I would gladly send you a sample of a tack pad if you wish. Please e-mail me at antonygerard@msn.com with your address if you would like a sample. Take care and take cards Antony Gerard PS; I see from your profile that you are from Denmark. I am originally from the Netherlands but now live in the U.S.A. While in Europa I did visit Copenhagen a few times. I found it a fun city. |

Hi - I do not understand these terms: e****c and *util*. Is it really necessary?
I just got a supposedly (and looks) brand new Double Deception (not "deluxe") Kennedy half dollar set through Ebay. The flipper coin is 100% frozen stuck and nothing I have tried will get it to open - shaking it, prying at it with a fingernail, or holding the edges and attempting to pull up any part of the insert with a strong magnet. I suppose I should call JB USA during the coming week, hopefully when they are open. I also sent a message to the seller but that may not help much. Any other suggestions? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!! |

If seller doesn't get back to you, you can open a dispute. Best option is to return defective coin and get your money back.
S.E.M. (The Sun, the Moon, and the Earth) is a sun and moon routine unlike any other. Limited to 100 sets, here is the promo:

If you have a flipper and understand how it works, you should know the first word - it's the thing that makes it close, starts with 'e' and rhymes with "plastic". If that doesn't help, PM me.
I'm guessing that *util* is emphasizing the word "util" rather than trying to obscure something like e*****c. It's awkwardly phrased, but doesn't have anything to do with what your problem is, I think he's just saying that some are tighter action as compared to others depending on how the flipper is designed, and how tight the band is. I've never used a Double Deception, but my understanding is the magnet should allow you to lever it open fairly easily, with another (stronger) magnet. Sounds like it's stuck, broken and/or the band has rotted inside. Check the edges to see if that's the issue, you could try cleaning it with some acetone, but I'd check with Mark first - I'm not sure if that will damage the other (intentional) glues inside. Can you see any of the cuts where it's supposed to fold/split apart? I agree that it's worth reaching out to the seller if they didn't deliver what they promised (a working DD). PS Why is this thread in "Nothing up my sleeve", shouldn't it be in "Trick coin trickery", since it's about flippers? I know it's not the most recent poster's fault, I'm just confused by it. |

I use a magicians silk. Place the silk in the shell then push the flip side into the shell. It might take a little tugging to get it loose, but after several times mine loosened up just fine.
Let me know how it works for you. Send me a reply . RichLucas |

Thanks everyone. The seller is helpful, but is in a different country. I spoke with Mr. Mason who said this model is not made anymore and he is not set up to repair it. I cannot get it open even using a strong magnet as he suggested. I don't understand the suggestion involving a silk. Thanks again.
