Anyone purchase this book yet? A bit on the expensive side but the effects sound interesting. Any reviews or comments would be greatly appreciated.
Can be found at http://www.leapinglizardsmagic.com Thank you, Matt |

I guess they sold some copies already according to their website. Anyone out there who purchased a copy care to share their thoughts?
Thanks, Matt |

Well, I still haven't caved in yet to purchase this book but was still wondering if someone else has by now?
Any kind of review would be greatly appreciated. It was reviewed in either Magic or Genii awhile back but I was hoping that someone else could add their comments. Best, Matt |

Well there is something interesting about the author:
"From 1988- 1994, author, performer and writer; Dean Montalbano created HUNDREDS of effects and variations, many of which were published in Genii, Linking Ring, MUM, MagiGram and other magic magazines. In 1994, he vanished from the magic world for 20 years. Much of his material was never released, and in some cases that which was released was hidden in obscurity due to publication in long out of print periodicals." Hmmm, vanished in 94 for 20 years. He must have dimensional travel down to be able to live 10 years that did not exist here in this plane. I will buy the book if it teaches how to do that

The effects in the book are certainly innovative and entertaining. To construct and present the tricks, I think it should have been produced on a two volume DVD set. This medium would have been more effective and practical. Thus, if you are interested in novel and original closeup magic, you should check it out.

Stay away from this book, it is one of those ones that will fly under the radar of most people but is FULL of gems that those with good performance building skills will be able to work up to showpieces. Do not Buy, I repeat do not buy. I am happy to be one of the few doing some of the effects exclusively.

Can someone confirm the validity of the above past contributions, and look up some of these past articles and ensure these claims are true?
They certainly are taking time to publish these works -- I'm still waiting for the mentalism release. Brian |

I read the sample and found it to be very clever ideas.
But IMO, its not really meant for the table hopping magician. Some are stage ideas. Maybe the sample did not contain the efects that are good for close up Too gimmicky so far from what I have read. But I stress again, the ideas are interesting.

Volume one is all close up. Volume 2, just out, is all psychicentertainment. Volume 3 in a year or so will be all stand up and stage.

Quietus of Creativity
By Dean Montalbano 2005 Close-up Conundrums. Contains about 60 routines There are very few card effects. If you are a close up worker this can be a very good thing. As I look through the book, much of the stuff I would not do. But the real value in the book is the shot of creativity it gives. You could take many of the routines and change them to fit you performing persona. The author’s performing style seems a little goofy to me but I give him very high marks in The first trick in the book demonstrates how to seemingly drop a person’s ring through a glass ashtray into a cup underneath it. It is a very clever methodology, however, I do not know how often that particular set up or situation would occur. Rainbows and Riddles is an interesting routine that is a kind of creative chop cup routine that uses very interesting props. Matchy-snap is a routine where you break a wooden match into three places and then restore it and strike it on the box. I did not care for the method, but the ideas are great. I believe this is mostly a book of ideas that will need some work. Many of the routines sound very good but the methodology seems a little suspect. That being said, if you are looking for something that might quick start your creative juices I would get this book. If you are looking to quickly add close up routines to your list then look else where. If you are getting tired of coin and card tricks and need something to give you ideas. It might be worth looking into. Yellowjacket |

Thanks for a pleasant review... As a note: This book is ONLY available from your favorite dealer through Murphy's. The book was sold by the publisher for only one year or 500 copies, and Murphy's bought up all that were left before they were to be destroyed.
You can still view the free sample at our site, but to buy Volume One, you will have to go through your favorite dealer. Volume 2, Mind Candy is still available directly through us OR from your favorite dealer as of this date. Cheers!

I have only quickly read through the book... and as of right now I feel that
I was a victim of the hype... buying this book was one of the biggest disappointments of the year... granted that there are some fantastical ideas for effects(some of them out of date)... the methods are disappinting... I would only suggest you buy this book.. if you believe that one good idea from a book is worth it.. perhaps another reason to buy it is that you enjoy reading fiction I know there is something in there for me... perhaps I am hoping I didn't spend the ridiculous amount on this book.... and that I might find something usefull |

Thanks for the review.
I've had this book on my "to buy" list for several months but have held off because of the lack of reviews. I don't disagree with Yellowjacket's point of view but it sounds like this book is not what I'm looking for. I'm looking for books with strong effects that have workable methods and if I'm really lucky a decent routine to go with it. I think I'll pass on this one. -Brian |

You can download the free sample in the leapinglizards's homepage and see for yourself
For me, I somehow felt that the book is full of ideas which does not seem to have seen the works of real life situations. At least that's the impression I got when I read the sample.
