Does anyone do a color changing knife routine at birthday parties?
I'm trying to work in some of my overall favorite stuff into my birthday show. I've shown it to kids, but not in a group setting. I love Whit Haydn's "Intricate Web of Distraction". I'm thinking that if I do the routine so that it seems the children are causing the switch, instead of being unable to catch it, they would love it I've wondered about knives and anal parents. All boys had knives by six when I was growing up around here. I'm only 35, but sometimes things change and I don't get the memo. This could be one of those times. Any thoughts? Gary Poe Tx |

I am not twice your age(but getting close). I grew up the same way. It was not only permissible, but expected for young "men" who were gentlemen to carry a pocket knife. If you add this to kid shows, I promise you will get more flak than kudos.
That said, I carry this trick with me all the time and do it impromptu for family units(I work part time in a magic store), and get good response. |

With this day and age, I prefer to stay away from knives when performing for children. Now this is only my preference and opinion, and each person has to decide for him or herself. I just think for me it conveys the wrong image or impression. I do not want the kids thinking it is OK to play with knives.
However, take the color changing principle and apply it to something the kids can relate to. Color changing lollipops can be done and is humorous and can lead to much more comedy. Just an example. My two cents worth. Kyle

They might be a little small, and I don't like the idea of using knives. You can get a lot more fun out of lollypops.

The best part is that it does not even have to be lollipops. I think you can get the same color changing effect or trick and use a lot of different kid-friendly items that will work just as well. Just use your imagination and see and search for items that kids can relate to, use or play with on a daily basis. Use these items for your color change.

Unfortunately, until someone finds a cure for political correctness, knives are probably a poor idea. You are right, of course, it shouldn't be a problem, but lot's of things that shouldn't be problems are problems these days. Since it only takes ONE solitary "offended" person to start a real firestorm of trouble, why court disaster. Keep your routine and substitute something like packs of gum gimmicked ala knives.

As all the above have said, no to knives, yes to paddle routines. They're a lot of fun. I usually throw in a paddle routine on walkabout, but haven't used one in a show. I'm sure there's a lot of potential, though. I'd mix it in with something else.

I agree, knives and kids don't mix - try fire effects instead...
Just kidding! I like the idea of Magic Matt's lolipops - unless you count rotten teeth to be as bad as cut fingers!

Let us put on our thinking caps for a second and see what other things can we use as a color-changing effect similar to knives but a lot safer and a better image for the kids? Lollipops are a good one and that has already been stated. Any other thoughts and ideas?
- You can almost take any paddle trick and create your own design by customizing the images that are found on them. - Perhaps color changing markers. Maybe half the marker is one color and half the other. Or perhaps the pen caps change color all the time. - Color changing crayon might be fun with a paddle move type of an idea. - Color changing Popsicle could be fun. You take a Popsicle stick and cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of a Popsicle. One side is one flavor and the other is a different flavor. Your patter is all about how you wanted strawberry but your bratty sister always took them all so you always ended up with chocolate. Could be easy to make and a funny story could go along with it. If you made a switch you could end up with a Popsicle that has all the flavors on it as an ending. Just some ideas for thought. Kyle

I use the 'Rainbow Plumes' in my show - a great sucker trick involving a white plume that you pass through a silver tube. You tell the audience that the white plume has changed colour in the tube but of course you don't show the changes. This gets the kids screaming, especially when you decide the last colour change will be to white! That one you show! At the end you pull the white plume through the tube again, and it's changed to multi-coloured. A great effect with plenty of business.

Hi Gary:
Using a pocket knive in a kid show doesn't bother me; however, I would leave it out for one reason. Almost always, you'll have at least one child look on the underside of the knive and say, "Hey, it's a different color down there!" I do Color Changing Knives in strolling situations, and have had this happen to me a number of times when children were present. I'd be doing the routine for a small crowd, and sure enough, some kids would crouch down and look under the knife. Now, I leave the knives out when doing strolling at family gatherings. Ron |

Thanks everyone. I knew I didn't fit in anymore. I voted for Reagan in the last 5 elections.

Yes, Gary, times have changed. Heck, my dad and uncles used to take rifles to school in case they saw something to shoot for supper while walking home.
Personally, I don't have a problem with color-changing knives. But these days, it seems half the population of America feels entitled to get offended about something. So you're better off steering clear of this one. That's why I'm thinking of switching to color-changing Glock 17s. I'll let you know what kind of response I get.
"Sure, I do Scotch and Soda in every show. What? You mean there's a trick by that name?"

I have to follow suit. I would never use knives in the children show.
It's a close up item for adults. I would not use them for any stand up at all.
