Yes but there are so so many more things, osiris was right with MR, most effects in mentalism can be replicated using it. thing is many mentalists and newbies wont take the time to learn it, but I suppose that is good for people like me

Hmm... Muscle Reading is something I'm just getting to grips with, and is very impressive and effective but... look at it from a specs point of view. What is the difference (presentational points aside) from say a CT to get a thought of number as opposed to MR? If performed right, the effect should be essentially the same. It is true that most effects can be replicated by MR, but the opposite is also true - MR can be replicated by other methods (that can result in , IMHO, a better presentational angle). I personally think that a lot of people who rave on about MR are looking at it from a "wow, look what I can do" point of view as opposed to what a spec sees. don't get me wrong, it is a great technique to know and use, but I doubt I would use it over other methods if given the chance. In the scenarion given (ie. completely off the cuff, with nothing to hand), it would certainly be one of the things you could do, and I would personally only use it in this type of scenario.

Concerning the James Coburn movie mentioned above, his character's name was not FLYNT but FLINT, as I recall. First name Derek. There were 2 movies - Our Man Flint and In Like Flint. His boss was Lee J. Cobb. What I liked best was that phone - the ring on it was so cool. And this has absolutely nothing to do with the topic.

I would write 1,2,3,4,5 on the paper.
They would name objects and I would put them next to the numbers...

1. cup
2. phone
3. beer bottle
4. lighter
5. key

I would ask them to think of one of these and try to project it to me.
I would then mark one of the objects.

I would then fold the paper up and write ABCD on one side and just one of these letters on the other side.

They would circle one letter for example C, it will match the letter C on the other side (see Banachek for this).

I will then ask them to name the object they were thinking of, they say "Beer Bottle," when I open the folded paper the number 3 is circled. (no nail writer, and bonus points for anyone who knows where this is from BUT doesn't know me).

there are lots of other bits that can be done, and yes a centre tear is the most obvious so why not. But then there is the stuff that doesn't require paper for example...Touches, lift, cold reading, muscle reading, book tests ect. I may even try to read the date on their coin.

A bit of trivia: it's said that "Carnac" was based on Kreskin after the great mentalist tripped while walking onstage during one of his many 1960s Tonight Show appearances.
"A good mentalist ... will teach you a miracle because he understands the subtleties ..." -- Banachek

"If this works it'll be BEAUTIFUL!" - The Amazing Kreskin on a stunning effect he performed on his 1970s television series (PS: it worked)

I would grab a watch and do Osterlind watch effect (sorry Mr Osterlind I can't remember the name of it right now). That effect always knocks peoples socks off. It is even better when people think that they "caught" you without your gimicks.

Being more or less a beginner in the mentalism, I still rely on the old easy ways of doing things. I would probably do the old three questions, one step ahead routine. If in a restaurant I would get permission to destroy a fork and go into a silverware bending routine.

A good question.

I have recently dediced to think about this issue a lot more. I was constantly being asked to do something, but had to decline because I lacked the impromptu stuff for when I was caught gimmickless. I had spent too long learning stage effects, and foolishly neglected my foundation.

I'm now loaded in my wallet to do (potentially) a fourty five minute act, in reality this is shortened, I do three effects instead.

I am still in the process of learning much of it, its all planned though.

Firstly, I am going to look towards a magicians choice routine with two people simultaneously.

Secondly, I will do a drawing dupe, followed by Osterlind's watch routine.

Other effects I have for this
Manipulaiton of Perception - Luke Jermay
For Andruzzi
Pk Touches
Kurotsuke
Heirloom
Derren's perfect coin reading.
Look towards impromptu book tests
Osterlind's PCT
Trust anyone who has gone through it.
