Does anyone out there have any ideas for using guitars in magic? I've been a professional musician for years, with an interest in magic since childhood and a pretty good magic library... so I am familiar with most illusion ideas. I don't want to stop the musical performance and "do a trick" but rather incorporate the two together. Have instruments appear, vanish or levitate.
We perform in a variety of venues, from theatres (which gives us control over lighting, and angles ) to outdoor surrounded events. I am mostly concerned about doing the magic in the theatre settings, but if anyone has some ideas for outdoor surrounded conditions, I salute you! Some of the ideas I'm considering ... a Z***** style gimmick on a custom built balsa wood guitar, I couldn't actually play it but it would make a great effect. I could incorporate the gimmick into the guitar cord. making a guitar appear. I could do this by st***ing the guitar with some sort of cover, but prefer to do it without an extra cover (cloth, streamers) . Any ideas? Has anyone used the Black Hole? could that be used to vanish/appear a guitar or hand drum? Any help would be apreciated. If you need to email anything "revealing" to me you can reach me at steve@ReelsMusic.com

I do a dancing hank routine. My current version has a point in the routine where I produce a hank, tie a knot, then after some by-play I stand it up on the table. I use Sean's Impossible Hank 2.0. I then pick up a guitar and when I strum the first chord, the hank dances and follows all of my moves. I am planning on building a table where I will be able to steal the guitar from the side. I will be a three tier table with spandex material sides. I will produce hanks, then place them on the table. As I do this I will steal the guitar. The hanks will then all start dancing. It will take awhile to get the mechanism for the multiple dancing hanks. As the hanks dance I back away and 'produce' the guitar and start playing. It will take some work, but it will be a lot of fun to perform.

Something with sheet music perhaps??? (Not only torn and restored)
A candle effect, if you happen to have a candle or two lighting your music. How about a self levitation from the stool you are sitting on. (Or for stage, a through the curtain, sit on bar type levitation) How about an asrah type vanish at the end of your performance? (Foster does the floating violin, then a vanish, more akin to a zombie ball) I am talking about a full form vanish of the guitar. As has been said, a broom, or straight suspension on the guitar. Perhaps your tie keeps getting in the way, so you cut it off and it reappears. Multiplying music picks? (Colour silver for visibility, miser dream with picks?) Just thoughts! Blair

Thanks everybody. good suggestions.
We are actually working on levitating one of the musicians, sitting yoga style and playing a sitar, using Andrew Mayne's Mid Air from Touching Sky. Blair, thanks for the idea on the ashra. This had crossed my mind, but I wasn't sure how to ditch the real guitar, since guitars usually can't get off the stage by themselves... now that would be a cool illusion! Where can I get some more info on foster's floating violin, I don't want to copy any body elses routine, just add some "wow" to our show.

Sorry about that but I meant Norm Nielsons' floating violin. I guess I was thinking about the method of vanish as Norm uses a "traditional" style zombie vanish for the violin once it has gone South.
For the guitar I was thinking more of a traditional Asrah vanish (full form, lay it on a table where it was when you picked it up to play, put it back, cover it and then float/vanish) or from a standing up type position from a guitar stand (perhaps a black art fence idea). Just thoughts. All relative to the performance style and your staging. Blair

I think it was early chriss angel (could be mistaken) who performed with a live band. He borrowed a guitar from one of his band members tryed to play it but couldn't, so he cut off his guitarist's hand, held it by the wrist and it "came to life" playing the guitar for him. ala kevin james glove/living hand gimmick. Also, there are probably 101 magic tricks that could be done with the strings. Maybe you could make the body of the guitar into a sort of duck bucket with a hinged flap in the back. Just a few more ideas. Good luck

I have also seen a case where, I believe it was a guitar, had a hinged front and back, so that when the parts were pulled open the frame could be seen empty and the load was behind the front door. This was based on one of those Grant style production boxes.

With regards to the microphon stand you can do floating stand or braking stand.
Its not the guitar but it relay to your preformance. Eran

I've combined large illusions with live music for years. I am a guitarist, so it was a natural concept for me to create illusions utilizing the various guitars I will use in a show. All of the ones I use are custom and proprietory to my show, but there are a lot of great ideas out there such as appearances, vanishes, levitations, etc. Be creative!

Multiplying guitars? 1 or more times, similar to the chairs that divide.
Dimishing guitar, where you are able to play each one and they become smaller as you go along, gimmicked guitars or the use of substitution. Blair

Again, thanks to everyone for the thoughts on this. This is quite an interesting community on the Café, I been lurking here for over a year, and just started posting. It is very cool to get input from so many different magicians and entertainers from newbies to seasoned professionals. Even though my schedule is quite busy, I try to check in on the Café every chance I get and see whats new.

Thanks Blair, I'd love to see your show...let me know if you ever perform in the Southeast US.
We sometimes do some summer gigs in New England, maybe we can get up to Canada...we do a lot of Celtic music so maybe we'll get in some festivals up there.

Just did a fund raiser for a local hospital with a Celtic fiddler, spoke to him about the possibility of putting the (linking) rings to his music, sort of a "Lord of the Rings" number. I have always been impressed by McBrides' rings and the presentation of Marco in Le Grand David to music. I have worked them this way before, but usually to pop type music. I think the pure fiddle with a fiddler on stage and myself with the rings could work out.
One of those numbers in the back of my mind for the next show. Blair

Just in your last post you gave a hint. What I would like to suggest is an alternative for "collecting" effects. Instead of that, look at your repertoire. What kind of music do you play? That may be a guidance to what your magic may be.
If you're as good as I assume you are as a musician, than take the time to be just as good as a magician. Wait a while before doing the obvious... The floating Sitar-player looks awesome in my mind! The broom suspension...rather not. ;-) Compare the "moods" of both music and "effect" and let them...resonate?
