I have a box of red, black, blue and green-backed Bicycle cards. I also have a box of OLD Bicycle cards and various gimmicked cards.
Keeping these resources in good order is often something of a nightmare. After a week or two of use, cards end up where they shouldn't be, and I sometimes struggle to quickly put my hands on a complete deck. I tidy up and sort out periodically, so it's not a huge problem. However, it did make me wonder if anyone else has this issue, and if anyone has developed a good robust system for storing and labelling cards so that your stocks of cards are well organised at all times. If you have any thoughts on this, please post them here. Thanks.

Steve,
Following a recent disaster where I had the wrong deck in hand - largely due to your description above - I have now become more disciplined. You have to be if you have many props to organise. I'm a bit of an anorak now and I keep a briefcase, the type with a document insert in the lid. The base is decked out in 'camera case' type foam with several compartments. Whilst they are unlabelled, I know where all the types of decks are and all the gaff cards are in marked envelopes in the lid. As as my wallets and packet tricks. Naturally, all this is for storage and transportation. No spectator ever sees in there!! The contents are somewhere around my body when needed and I am only ever seen with one deck of cards in hand. My close up mat lies neatly accross the base contents just in case any nosey people manage to get a look in. Hope this helps. |

Went to a baseball trading card store. Had all sorts of boxes for storing and organizing cards. I found some that worked for me and were very inexpensive.

I use a baseball card album with plastic sleeves for packets and an old cassette organizers with the guts ripped out for special decks. My decks are initialed on the boxes. Regular decks are lying around and in a box under my bed.
While I try to put everything back immediately after use, I too sometimes end up with piles of all kinds of props on my end table. |

Thanks for this topic! I've been wondering if one can purchase eg Bicycle card boxes alone in bulk. Thanks for the idea about baseball cards, but are these Poker size?

Speaking of having your cards in a mess, had a shocker a little while ago. while doing an effect to show their selection wasn't in the deck but in my wallet, I found that in fact their selection (duplicate) was in the deck and needless to say that didn't have the desired results.
Solution: no need to clean up, just get the to sign the card and if there is another in the deck you can also claim a vanishing signature effect.HaHa ST

Recently I decided to organize all my decks and cards. I purchased 8 of these cabinets, and the width of the drawers perfectly fit a poker sized deck. Stick labels on the drawer fronts and it's the perfect storage medium. Available from B&Q for £4.98 each.

Hi Roger, The answer to your question is no. They are kept on a shelf in my study, but I can now access any deck or packet trick instantly. I can then load my case in minutes with exactly what I require. I have filled nearly all 120 trays with decks, packet tricks, and smaller close up items. It used to take up to an hour to find everything I needed for a performance, but now it's a breeze.

I have a drawer full of decks. Special Decks have initials on the inside of one of the flaps, E.g. ID, MT, SD, etc. Unopened Decks are still in their cellophane so they are easy to spot.
I always have a full deck including jokers with no duplicates in a Card Guard. I then have a second drawer where decks go when they die, either they are too worn out or there are some missing, if I ever need to practice ripping, folding etc I grab a few cards from that drawer. Usually if I have a full deck that is getting near the end of it's life I give it to someone that I've done a trick for, preferably a kid, they appreciate it more. Then I'll show them something like the 21 card trick so they can go and annoy their parents and other Magicians. -MM |

I've found making a 3 letter mark on the bar code.
Such as "STR" for Stripper for "ACE" for my deck with aces at the top. "CLR" for my Color Change, etc. |

I also put very small letter codes on the bottom of each card box with a fine point marker. This is good for stacked decks as well as gaffed ones.

MagicMarker and Iceman90 have systems to help them identify gaffed decks, but I've shy'd away from any conspicious markings that might tip a layman, even as unlikely as that is. I'm worried they'd see it and ask, "ID ? or, MP ? What's that mean ?".
Then I thought of a perfect cover - if you can get hold of a pricing gun that makes those little price stickers, make up a set of prices that you know will indict the gaff, but to the layman, it'll just look like a price sticker. Naturally, if the price is going to vary with different gaffed decks, it would be better to use different guns/stickers from different stores to reflect the variations in price. Hard part is working out the logistics of the code ! I'm not there yet..

What if you were to price them in order of their use in your routine? .10,.20,.30 etc and then change the last "0" to keep it looking normal i.e. 3.10 <--first deck 3.25<-- second deck 3.38 3.45 3.59 5.66 etc. |

I have a very good friend who likes an expensive cigar ! He tips me his cigar boxes when he's done with them, they are ornate, carved wood with hinges, a poker deck can stand up on it's side ( very secure) will hold around 12 decks ! Looks very expensive and OLD ! Kenny

Ziatro,
Thanks for the tip on organizing lots of decks and accessories with the plastic drawer case. I think I'll bring a dozen decks to a local Walmart here in the U.S. and see what they have that will work. After that, I'm heading to some kind of smoke shop and see if they'll sell a nice cigar box or two as Kenny suggests. I think I'd like to keep the masses of stuff I have in my closet in plastic containers and then one or two nice cigar boxes for show. Gary |
