There is a thread going on in the book review section (Good bad and the garbagewhere a purported author of a book on children's entertainment refers to the kids as "brats" and "urchins". If I knew how to put a link to it I would.
Perhaps I am being oversensitive but I would have thought that anyone who refers to children in those terms loses some credibility if they are supposed to be writing a book on the subject. What do the rest of you think about this? |

Wait til the book is published before fighting over its merits. See if it comes to press, then review it! Don't start a firestorm over rumor!
Yes, I have in my 30+ yrs of entertainment experience seen children that fit the "Brat" & "Urchin" category. We all have. We live in a world of "Kiddie Overindulgence"! Mommy I WANT THAT! Yes, dear! Wait to see if the book comes out and give it an honest review. Just my 2 cents worth! John |

HI,
I agree with John you cannot judge the book without having read it, A lot of people will have a bias agianst the book (if it comes to light) simply because of their dislike of the author. .............. Perhaps I am being oversensitive but I would have thought that anyone who refers to children in those terms loses some credibility if they are supposed to be writing a book on the subject. What do the rest of you think about this? Yes I personaly think you are being way too ----- goody two shoes! Phillip |

I see really lovely kids, and at the other end of the scale I see some really nasty brats.

At one time I believe one of the books incorporated into the series of children's magic by Frances Marshall was called "Magic for Monsters". I'd take the wait and see stance too.

That can't be the author's last (or even most common) term - let's not be all PC, now - those were among the things I'd OCCASIONALLY call my Cub Scout kids and they knew it was in jest, and we were all crazy about each other.

Sounds like funny book. To be a successful kids entertainer you need a genuine love for kids. I'm sure the author uses the words "brats" and "urchins" only in jest. I prefer the term "yard apes" myself.

Nobody who really hated kids would be doing kids magic! They would be trying to stay as far away from them as possible! I'm surprised you decided to try and revive this thread again about a book you haven't even seen. You have obviously never seen the comic aggressive kids performer in action. If there was one in your area you'd probably not be getting any work
Lighten up, I would have thought taking things less seriously was an essential ingredient for a childrens entertainer. Besides, if every child you've ever met has been an absolute angel exactly where do you perform your shows? Paul. |

Most kid performers do love kids. That does not make it unacceptable to realize and acknowledge that everyone has seen a brat in the group. Any one who has done a kid show knows that they have come across one of those kids where you think "wow wont somebody just kick that kid".

Anybody who performs frequently for children has had the chance to have the most wounderful of audiences.. and sometimes the worst! Performing for kids has pitfalls that are unique due to the young age of the spectators. Kids who are amazed frequently remain silent, eyes wide open and react very little... On the other hand, if you get them a little excited (and a magic show should be exciting for them...), they can be hard to handle! And lets face it. No matter how much you love kids, sometimes you do get "brats". It's all part of the job.
Personnally, if this book deals with that reality of being a children entertainer, I am curious to hear more about it, and definitly read it. Have a nice day! Louis |

When I was taking a sign language class we learned and interesting sign.
Basically with on hand you made a horn, with the other half a halo. Most people fit into the part "devil" part "angel" category. This nearly normal guy does. Someone once said there is a bit of bad in the best of us, and a bit of good in the worst of us. In the past I worked as a counselor in Kansas' Oldest Bed and Breakfast. (AKA Lansing Correctional Prison) They had long term rates on stays.(mini lol) I try to take peoples post (including my own) with a grain of salt. In looking at any information,(including my own) I try to look at the source. Some people are what my magical mother called "Pot Stirrers" I do not know the motivation for this post. On the internet with anonynimty(sic) this is sometimes difficult. I have a tendency to at first view things as Cholly, by golly did. As one great juggler/comedian said.(Mr. Fields) I like children.(His next line was something like...I like them boiled, fried) His "feud" with Charlie McCarthy makes interesting study.
