DT13... that was EXCELLENT!!!
I wanted to nitpick it 'just for the heck of it' but I honestly couldn't. Nor would I like to add anything to it for fear of spoiling it. Well said!

Rick,
I find it odd that the DGAF people have no credentials, identity or avatar. Therefore to me they don't exsist, and it's obvious that DarkSeance has a split personality and is also Christopher Wallace. I suggest that if you want to make them go away just tell them in a post that you decided to hit IGNORE anytime he reponds to your posts and just reply by posting IGNORE and they'll probably go away if you show that they are not getting to you. Your controversal posts make for good reading and get some reactionary responses and that's great but the digression to answer the absurd put's a tarnish on the chrome. Hit "IGNORE" Best, Sebastian

Not all DGAF members have no avatar, and a lot certainly do have credentials.

"If Dunninger was around today people wouldn't buy his "Look at me with my super mind!" approach, it is dated.. Back then audiences where far easier to convince you had a special something be it psychic, psychological or some super trained 5 senses..
In todays world audiences wont except someone on stage performing in that way, they'll get bored and challenge the guy on stage.. " Very good post, but I don't think Mr Duninger would have used the same approach if he was alive now. He would adapt to what the audience wanted. He would come up with new ways to do the same type of effect but it will probably be presented in the same way. Uri Geller does the same stuff that he did years ago. Do the audience challenge him? NO. Only Magicians and mentalists and the like. So I must disagree with the Dunninger quote. If you pull it off well you can fool anybody with the simplest of things. Hell Presidents have been doing it for years. "My definition of a mentalist is someone who performs entertainment based around the five senses, predicts outcomes, reads people, actions, choices. I don't think being a mentalist is something that is earnt at all.. If you fix a car your a mechanic, if you fix people your a doctor or nurse. If you perform magic your a magician and if you read minds in one way or another your a mentalist.." Define Magician. A Mentalist is a magician in my view as well as The Layperson's view. He does unbelievable things, whether by mind or by had gestures. Does this mean that a sleight of hand magician should be called a legerdemainist? If this was the case then you should keep breaking it down. I don't neccessarily think that the more difficult things should be learned as this makes no difference to anyone but the layperson. I have gotten verymuch into doing moer difficult moves only to have more things go wrong. It took an 80 Year old Magician to teach me that the simplist moves are just as effective to the audience and will have less go wrong. Regards Wolflock

I think, Rick, you like the attention this gets you - that's why you keep winding people up!
By the way - is it just me, or is this a (predominantly) UK / US divide which all started with someone being offended by the fact that old people smell of wee?

Thanks Withnail, you nearly made me spit my coffee all over my laptop. And yes, I agree, it is mainly a uk/us divide.

When I make a posting, it's because I have something to say. If you wish to look at it like you are...then you to, missed the point. It's not my fault if most of these DGAF guys are to inexperienced to understand. As I said...read TGENTILE's answer, it looks like he was one of very few readers to actually click in on the meaning behind it.
My prediction: All the DGAF guys are between 18 and 25 years old..."the experienced age". ~Rick~ I'm just glad I can get these guys thinking about things. It's too bad that they have the attitude they do, they could learn something from the old guys like you and me. But, they will get bored, and go their own way. Actually, I kind of like it...it shows me how the other side of mentalism lives, acts and thinks....(like the Trailer Park Boys). Mr.Black...we can start our own gang and be known as the OGIM...."Old Guys In Mentalism"..LOL! ~Rick~ |

Here's a thought -
We "in the trade" are the only ones who need a definition of the term "mentalist". And the reason? Because we all want to be unique, and to think that we are 'simply' mental magicians (shudder), well, that just won't do. But we are also incapable of stepping outside of who we are and trying to see the term mentalist through the eyes of our audience...Rick's choices for his examples were good, since all of these folks are known to be good in their respectice performances. However, I understand that the term "mentalist", in the UK, means someone who has been in a mental health facility (read: asylum). Now, sorry, but I don't want to be thought of a little left-of-center, whether it is true or not! <grin> Christopher, you seem to be really caught up in the "here-and-now", and don't want to acknowledge anything older than you are. Fine, but can *you* define the term mentalist? Can you point to someone that we would know and recognize as being a mentalist? Christopher Hart? Derren Brown? David Blaine? (Remember: we are the ones categorizing, not the public. And we are the ones who are choosing, not the public). There is a reason that billet work is still around - it is a classic. And that's what "classic" means: to have a long life, and be thought of, remembered, and used for an exceptionally long time. If this was 100 years ago most of the techniques you currently use wouldn't be around, or recognized for their potential. However, those little slips of paper were still available... And, one last thought: how you label yourself is only important to you. Ask any agent, marketer, professional - someone who actually "works" in the "real world" - all the paying customer wants is to be entertained. So if the word mentalist is your label, fine. But tattooing it on your forehead won't get you any work, unless your act is good. And you'll still have to define the term to anyone who looks at you. And then people will simply wonder about you anyway... Comments? Email me, since I just happened to drop in on this discussion... Lee |
