I would like to know what you guys think. I am a clown. I do birthday parties and stage shows. In my stage shows I like to close w/ "beautiful magic" (ie snow storm in china and zombie) using a inspirational message. I know lots of people say clowns should not do this type of magic because you go from being funny to elegance in one fail swoop. I want to get some feedback. Thanks in advance!!! PIZZAZZ
May all your days be "magic" days

Do it. Don't do it. Both answers may be correct. Think about your character. In the abstract it does'nt sound right to go from funny to serious or pretty or elegant magic. What kind of clown are you? Do you try for elegance without success? and finnaly succeed, Maybe with the audiences help?

It is possible to do. Create a character. At end of the show speak about something dear to you and inform the audience in a story manner why and change the pace.

A clown character like Bozo - not a fit
A clown character like E. Kelly or Chaplin - definite fit This is what I would use as a starting point and speaks to the character both Curtis and PROFED mentioned in their posts. Frank Tougas

They are right on the money. This really comes down to character and what your character is and is not. You really must define your clown character and who he or she is. Once you have developed this character, you will learn to realize what magic is out of character for you and what can be done.
I like Frank's analogy. It is a perfect example of how something can be in character or out of character based upon who you are and what you portray to an audience. The most important thing is that you become true to yourself and admit when soemthing just will not work for your show and your style. Even if it is a trick you love, there may be cases where you just have to put it aside because it will not work in the show you present. Kyle

It has also been said clowns speak to and from the heart. If, as has been echoed here so many times already, that coincides with your character then go with it. But in addition to character there is also the routining of your act: how this it flow from piece to piece? Is there a natural progression of sorts? Does everything flow and reach a climax? Does it make sense that you are ending the way you are ending? Does it help to reach a sense of finality or completion? It just might....

Hi Pizzazz,
Some friends of mine are clowns. A few of them are only clowns and some are doing comedy magic. One of them is trying to do serious magic, but peoples are always waiting for something funny. So create a reason or a situation to introduce serious and beautiful magical effects. Use a volunter in the assistance (child, phoney guy or shy girl) and ask him or her to hypnotise you. Told the audience that you want to became the only hypnotised clown in the world who can do real and beautiful magic. Don't forget to let them know that the only way to get you back from the hypnotic trance is...a big round of applause at the of the act! Andre Le Magicien Quebec Canada Excuse my French...
