I posted this list in the "Johnny Carson passed away" discussion but I felt it should be placed in it's own discussion. So if any of you happened to catch any of these episodes maybe you can share your memory of it.

I have had the great pleasure of seeing Walter Blaney's visit to the tonight show; watching it inside Walter's house and having Walter share all of his memories of the whole experience with me. Walter has always been very proud of his Tonight Show experience. Carson was so impressed with Walter; that he waived the standard time limit and Walter was able to perform much longer. Walter told me about his whole experience at the tonight show, but those are his memories and I'm not sure if he wants me telling people; so I won't share. He had a blast performing his full length Vanishing Bird Cage illusion as well as his Ladder Levitation. It had to have been a great experience.
Are you certain David Copperfield was on his show? I would assume he would have been. However, if you go to Carson's site, it has a section where you can locate any guest that he had on the show. If you type in Copperfield; no matches are found. Although anyone else I type in (like Lance Burton and Walter Blaney) they are found right away. Does anyone actually remember Copperfield on Carson?

I don't remember Copperfield ever being on it. I checked the Carson webiste and my name doesn't come up either, so it must have been a dream!!!!

David has been on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno as the Host, however it is my understanding that David was Never on with Johnny Hosting.

That must have been where my mistake on the list came from. DC was on the Late show but not with Carson. Sorry about that.

I remember first seeing Jimmy Grippo on the Tonight Show. He performed for Johnny, Bert Convey, and Sally Kellerman. He was fantastic and blew them all away. It looked like real magic and has produced a life long memory for me.

He's not a magician but this listing of magicians who appeared on Johnny Carson's show would not be complete without him. He's a stand-up comic by the name of Pete Barbutti. Johnny was the Tonight Show's host but he was off on this particular night. I recall that Richard Dawson (Family Feud) was the guest host. His first guest was Jack Klugman. Then Barbutti came out and did some stand-up comedy. He closed his act with a bit he called "Bad magician - good drummer". He essentially
mimed a Vegas-style magic act while the band's drummer did rimshots. He may not sound like much to read it here but I recall that Richard and Jack were literally passing a box of kleenix between them to wipe their tears. They were laughing that hard. It was about the funniest thing I ever saw. Anyone remember this? |

Don't forget Tony Curtis. Tony was an IBM & SAM member, frequent presenter at the AMA and not only performed magic on Carson, but guest hosted as well.

If memory serves, Dom Deluise, hope I spelled that right, also did a parody magic act on Carson.

My 'ol pal Russel Feig (now Russ Merlin), appeared with Carson on the Tonight Show doing his mime & magic act. He's now doing a comedy spot in "V" the ultimate variety show, playing in Vegas.
I was on the Tonight Show with Carson as well, but then, I awoke.... HI JEFF!!!!

Russ Merlin, I think I saw him in Vegas about 5 or 6 years ago. Did he do a spot in Showgirls of Magic? He had this super funny bit with people from the audience wearing Halloween masks and sitting on balloons. It really had me in tears.
I really wish some of those Carson appearances were available on YouTube or elsewhere; especially Mike Skinner when he was in his prime. Of course the BEST appearances are probably Uri Gellar's NON-performance where he didn't feel strong. Also, Lance Burton's where he was first scheduled for 6 minutes and when Johnny watched in rehersal, gave him 12. When's the last time you saw a magician on a talk show do a 12 minute bit? |

On one of the New Years Eve shows, he had "Gong Show" winner Dr. Flamo, doing his comedic 'accoustics of fire' candle routine (screaming "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" as he held his hand over the flames of candles of varied heights).

Did Mike Skinner do Rollover Aces on the Carson show? I seem to recall he did but I could be wrong.
