I've been using it for close to a decade now and love it. BUT, it has its limitations! Some of the material already mentioned is quite excellent. Especially the Cassidy MENTALISM DVD (there are several routines using the OAH but I highly recommend familiarising yourself with his "Jazz Q&A"... I just think this and the 3-Envelope routine are closer to what you're asking about.) Nelson covers the OAH in a couple of manuscripts, most notedly "visions of tomorrow" (Hades Publications), which lends to the Reader a very clever ruse that seems to throw the "experts" off your trail. Unlike most such acts this one uses colored slips of paper and the colored slip you pull from the basket and hand to your assistant is the one read and given directly back to the sitter... this is an awesome piece of work even in today's world. I've actually seen it used in a Spiritualist Church in Springfield, Ohio several years ago and the effect on the congregation was down right amazing (dang near inspired me to start my own religion). You may also want to check out the Falkenstien & Willard videos (tape II covers the Blindfold act e.g. OAH). Another great video for billet work is Docc Hilford's FASTER THAN A SPEEDING BILLET (both are available through Stevens Magic). Finally, I'll plug Lee Earle's Teach In video on the Q&A. Oops! I nearly forgot that our own BEV has his "POST JUSTIFY" book available as well. There are several routines included in this nifty eBook that takes billet reading into the 21st century, using Post It notes... some very clever thinking! I highly recommend this little tome to anyone claiming to be a Mentalist. I think I've covered the bulk of what's out there and current. I know there's some older pieces (Check the Hades Listings) but I'll not go into all that. This is enough to keep most people busy for a while, not to mention allowing them sufficient insight for becoming a guru. Best of luck! |

Aside from the Richey Technique, Docc also has an interesting take on "one ahead" in his "Femme Fatale" supplement to the Cassandra Deck. It's kind of a rationale that disguises the modus operandi rather elegantly. The problem with "one ahead" is that it can be performed sloppily and tip itself to spectators, or it can be performed well and still tip off observant spectators. Docc's solution gets around this.

I'll echo some of the routines from Cassidy that is the 'logical' way of doing one-aheads, like his 4th Dimensional Telepathy. Related, another good use of one ahead is from Basil Horwitz in The Mental Magick of Basil Horwitz.

Hey Sven...that's GREAT...can you (if possible) e-mail me about it and give me your thoughts and views on the effect and how the audience responce was and any tips you could give me ? That would be greatly appreciated.

I use 4th dimensional telepathy in most shows...and it kills...It does not play at all like a typical one ahead, since there is no force of anything and especially since you can return each person's billet back as you reveal your thought.

Speaking of "Tervil," have any of you tried it with Busch's business card peek? I believe it's called the "Zen Billet," or somesuch. I've been fussing with the handling and haven't performed it yet, but the mechanics of the peek play beautifully into the method for "Tervil." Just a thought, so far.

In addition to having a good patter and nerves on this, the only important thing as I can see it, is to make sure to not do it for a too small gropup of people who know eachother well. It is interesting, just as with "A Question and the Answer" , I have read through time after time for ages, without trying it out. One of the main reasons for not trying this out has probably been the "I couldn't possibly get away with THAT (you know what!)" Well, after having seen it done on ETMMM, I got convinced about that that after all could be possible. And it was, believe me!! Sven Quote:

No one has yet mentioned that the Xpert device comes with a very good one-ahead (actually one-behind) routine. The gimmick allows you to cover your tracks very cleanly.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

The "Zen Billet" I'm talking about is from Peek Encores. I may have the name wrong, but it uses a business card, folded in quarters, and allows you to view the entire writing surface. Folded, it's the perfect size for Tervil's necessary sleights and the quick peek fits perfectly into Tervil's method. Still haven't tried it yet, but it's looking pretty good.
