Hey all,
Does anyone know of a link to see Max Maven performing? A clip from his dvd series perhaps? Thanks!

Not actually a performance video but you may try "Mingames" which is an interactive mindreading video starring none other than Maven along with the lovely Mavenettes.

Don't get me wrong, when this first came out, it was great, but watch it now...it's one of the cheesiest, retro things you can watch. Sorry Max. I love ya, but man that is hilarious. |

An excellent description of his one-man show, "Max Maven: An Evening of Knowing and Not Knowing", was published in the January 2005 issue of "MAGIC".
The article, written by Germany's Wittus Witt, gives the reader a clear indication of just how talented and experienced a performer Max Maven is. Read the article and, if you're fortunate enough to do so, see the show and you'll realise just how good Max Maven is. In addition you'll also come to the realisation that, compared to what Max Maven offers his audiences, a lot of other contemporary 'mentalism' can only be regarded as highly mediocre.

His DVD series are good! The videomind series has a lot of good stuff on them.

It seems like he was on a TV special (along with others) in the 90s. Can't remember the network or the name of the show, but I seem to remember Max doing a "lock and key" illusion, perhaps "7 keys". Was it "World's Greatest Magic", anyone?

I was fortuneate to see Max's show in LA in November. Great show...very interesting how different his style is from other mentalists.
I second the comment about the Mindgames tape...many cool self-working tricks and Maven in some hilarious self-effacing scenes. The tape must be seen to be appreciated...a serious, mysterious mind reader amongst bad 80's sets and Vegas dancers. Hilarious and very bizarre. |

Also had the pleasure to see his show in LA. The BEST mentalism or magic show I have ever seen IMHO. I absolutely loved his character and presentations. I wanted a clip to show some of my friends how great he is actually. I may buy one of his videomind dvds but sometimes performers do not do their best presentations when shooting and instructional dvd so people wont copy them.

In his stage show he was still the Max you see on the tapes, but less casual, and much more polished. It was obvious Maven spent hours writing, perfecting and shaping the show. Also interesting is that in a 90(?) minute show, I believe he did only 5-6 routines, none of them being overly complicated in terms of plot lines...yet the show kept moving nicely. (An amateur might have fit 25 into 90 min). As a performer, Maven could easily do an entertaining 90 minute show without any effects...just stories..plots..his character...and playing off of the audience.

This program is dear to my heart, as it was instumental in bringing me back to magic, after decades of absence. (From my late teens to my late forties.) I saw Eugene Burger, Max Maven, Jeff McBride and others for the first time and saw how magic can be so much more than just "the trick". I owe them all a lot. I have been given the opportunity to thank Eugene and Jeff personally. Mark Ross |

I think the effect you are looking for is Kurotsuke. It is availible on Volume One of the Videomind Series (I think it's the parlour mentalism DVD/tape).
Trust anyone who has gone through it.
