Nice work on that webpage Michael. That wire looks like about a 0.030 or so or better. Rick if that 0.024 is unwound I bet that would work just fine. I'll check the wire in my shop tomorrow and see what I've got in case you need some and cant get it down there. I have been using it to propell cards in the Card Daggers I make occasionally.
Insurance adjuster coming out here tomorrow morning (finally) to check the damage from the tree falling on the house. We've already replaced most of the electrical system and you know about my adventures with the chain saw. Oh yeah, Rick. We hit four numbers on the powerball last night. Unfortunately not enough to pull off the 17 hour Biro lecture though. Will keep trying on the redneck retirement plan!!! -=tabman

The gauge of the wire is largely dependant on the size of the hinge and the force by which it needs to operate. The wire shown on the site is actually thinner than I use for the hinges on Card Stars or Ricardo Rabbit. It was just handy when I went downstairs with the camera. You just have to play. If the spring is either too weak or too strong, just knock the pin back out and make a different spring. This stuff is cheap enough that you can afford to screw up a few to get it right.

I just added another photo to that site, showing a completed spring hinge on the back of a Card Star.

Man, what a nice website Michael, I'll be busy this weekend.
Tabby, durn, that's GREAT! $100.00. I've hit 2 numbers before.. but that's all. I did win $27 on a scratch off last time we went up. Think my chances are MUCH better doing WiFi here. Good meeting today 2 1/2 hours... |

Shucks Michael!
The spring maker instructions are plum beautiful. Tabman, I have never known a lottery winner. Congratulations! I'm glad you all know all about guage sizes. All I remember is that weddings are 12 guage. (I've got to finish planting roses before 4 PM. The boss will be here to inspect.) Bob |

I would like to say thank you to Michael Baker for sending me a very nice gift in the mail today. It's a beautiful handmade wand and presentation case and I really appreciate it. Since meeting Michael here on the Café he and I have become friends and I believe that his work is excellent and have pointed several people in his direction since I can't handle everything that comes my way. I like getting good people together (as does Bob Sanders too).
My wife got tears in her eyes as we opened the box today. I want everyone to know that Baker the Magician is a stand up guy and a craftsman of the first order. Michael sent this to me privately but I want everyone to know that I appreciate him and his work. Thank you Michael. The wand and case will have a special place in my home and in my heart. your pal, -=tabman

Wow...I'm finally legal! I bought an ad on the Café.
Speaking of Chainsaws...one of my most prized posessions was a Redwood Chainsaw carved "BigFoot" which stood outside my door. I watched him being skilfully crafted on the Avenue Of The Giants in the early 90's. In wonderful Encinitas where there is NO crime to speak of...really...some piece of human waste, a veritable turd concieved in a moment of disgrace...opened my gate and stole it a week ago. I hate Turds.

Tabby,
LOL! That wand may break some knuckles for sure. It has a little weight to it. Enjoy it. Doug, I despise thieves. That sucks! ~michael

Don't get me started on Crime, unemployment and the economy. I'll get political really quickly.
That sucks Doug. Yes, Tabby, I agree. No one says thank you that much anymore. But let it be known that I thank each and everyone who posts or reads this topic. I love seeing the hits number grow and know the lurkers must be enjoying the conversation. Michael, tommorow is wood day for me and spring hinge day. Should be fun. Where the heck is Pete at? He's still missing in action. |

Your ad looks good Doug!!! That should get you some visitors.
Bob, I hope you got the roses in!!! Rick, good luck with those hinges tomorrow!!! Baker, when are yall heading up north??? All - I am booked in Columbus, GA on the 11th and 12th so I'm sorry I cant make it to lunch. Maybe our next step is to organize a one day mini-convention set sometime next winter when things slow down again. I'm still trying to win the powerball so maybe we can book Pete for his 17 hour lecture???? -=tabman

This morning I started cutting the Harbin table on the bandsaw. Pics to follow soon.
The question I have, for the ZigZag Shape of the Table and base, should I use a Jigsaw to cut it out, or the bandsaw. I don't have a scroll saw, but if that is best, then I'm sure Syd would understand a quick trip to Lowe's to get one.. LOL PMZZ: OK Tabby, well if it's Syd and I, Michael, Bob and Lucy, then we should meet in Birmingham, since that's in between Bob and I. Rick |

Rick,
The idea for Birmingham may be best for me, because if I get the show I had been asked about, it was mostly the driving time that would kill me. I may be able to juggle things a bit better if that 3+ hours was spared. Hmmm??? Before you go out and buy any new power tools let me look over the specs on the Harbin table to see what you are up against. I'll get back here real quick. Sometimes what I do is cut the straight lines with band or table saw for neatness, and then ease the curves and corners with the scroll saw or a jigsaw. If you have a narrow blade on your band saw, it may make the curves. Be careful though!!! Band saws get real dangerous when you twist the blades. Are you making this from plywood? If you use the jigsaw (I'm assuming a hand held?), then put in a metal cutting blade with fine teeth. You will splinter the wood less. Less to repair later. ~michael

Ok, Rick,
I just checked the plans on the table. Wasn't sure which of the two you were planning to make, but if the first, I'd cut the sweeping curves with the bandsaw. Shut it off when you get to the hard 90 degree corners. Back it out and do those with a jig saw (use a fine, narrow blade for best results). Ease it back into the bandsaw, WITH IT TURNED OFF, until you get to the end of the cut. Make sure you aren't binding and start the next straight cut. This may take awhile but should produce good results. If you are doing the second design, I would attack this differently (you could also use this approach with the first design). I would get enough poster board to make a full size pattern of what the book's plans show. Butt the poster board until you have a piece big enough to draw the entire pattern on, then tape all those pieces together, forming one big sheet. Cut the pattern apart into left center and right sections. Transfer these to the wood, not as they will ultimately link together, but with spaces of waste between them (so that straight lines could be cut separating them). Cut those straight lines, separating the three sections. Now cut each of those sections apart from one another where the pieces actually do hinge. Now cut away the waste from each piece and you will find that the only inside edges or corners to deal with will be in the center section. That will save you time and aggravation. For the left and right sections, every cut can be made straight in, stopping at the corners. Let me know if you have any questions. ~michael PS- Don't forget to label everything before you cut it apart!!

Michael,
Did it all on the band saw and just used some extra wood for the center sections.. Will have pics up soon! It came out pretty good. Havent started on the hinges yet, I assume I use the bandsaw to cut the hinges where the spring needs to go? And yes, you'll see the lables on ALL the parts!!!! |

One of those lucky breaks!
I finished up a mermaid and cut a nice piece of white pine to mount it on by eyeballing the cut. Sprayed the flat black...all to a 33 1/3 rpm vynal of Benny Goodman...Then after I mounted the mermaid to the wood, I thought ok...wouldn't it look really super in that 'old' small 'antique-ee' truck...and do ya know that wood base fit exactly snug and comfy in the litle trunk just like it was s'pose to from the get go! Ain't life grand!!
