Great to have your comments Richard!
I guess I wasn't clear in what I said. The Beyond ESP2 cards are great. Although, I have never much liked marked cards. The Beyond ESP2 cards have well hidden marks, even so good they make me feel they aren't marked. I am confident that no one, unless they have read the booklet or they know they are marked would ever find the markings by casual playing or even studying them(Beyond ESP2 deck). Richards routine in the booklet is wonderful. It was the one routine that I immediately began working on. The use of the marked deck and the deck preparation makes for a fantastic routine. Maybe I do like Marked cards after all! I bought Beyond ESP2 for just the cards, since the Rhine cards are impossible to find and Royal cards have obvious markings. I was pleasntly surprised by the booklet. Now the problem is I need a bunch more of the cards! PS As Richard says the markings are easy to spot, once you know what to look for! Even without my glasses! |

You need to train your self to read the markings, the more you do it the more easily it is to read them. And that is not the case with Royal esp cards.

Anyone do a comparision between these cards and Sean Taylor's "Symbology"?

Two of the finest zener-like card sets, I love both of them.
Symbology has the unique feature that they allow you to adapt many playing card routines directly for them (there are four suits and 13 unique designs in each suit although this isn't obvious). The potential with them is therefore enormous though they do have traditional playing card backs, which is a shame. Beyond ESP2 are two sets, one plain red backed, one plain black backed, of the traditional five designs printed in black. The marking is very subtle and ingenious indeed. I doubt anyone would ever notice anything amiss with them and more importantly, people are likey to dismiss any such idea early from consideration, by the mere look of them. Although neither set are reliant on the marking, Id have to say Id need decent lighting conditions to use either. Both are nice cards, equally very fittingly packaged. Both come with a booklet of a number of great and well written routines and both come with some extra cards, double faced, double backs, etc. I'd like one day to see some original zener cards (anyone?), I presume they'd be just large format plain white square cards with the five designs colour printed on them. Nick. |

Here's a nice 'bit' that I use with the black backed Beyond ESP cards:
"The reason the IPRA print the backs as a solid block of black is so that even if you were to hold a card up to the light, you wouldn't be able to see through it..." As I say this, I match actions to words and hold the card up to the light with the back facing me (and whoever I'm performing for). I encourage them to try to see through the card. It's a subtle way of calling attention to the backs and dispelling the notion of marked cards without ever directly referring to marked cards. (Alas, the same thing cannot be done with the red backed cards, but perhaps that means there's room there for another effect entirely...) Back on topic, I've found that some of the Beyond ESP2 cards are printed off-centre. This is a tad annoying since that's how my girlfriend suspected they were marked. A slight flaw in an otherwise perfect set of Zener cards. Anyone else notice this?

I havent noticed that, but then again I havetnt looked, so shall inspect them when I get a oment. However, thanks Stephen for the great idea of drawing attention to the backs, a very indirect way of saying what you would LOVE to say which is "look, they CANT be marked"
Best, Kennedy

I think I mentioned this in a different thread, but another advantage to the black backs is that they can function as shiners.
Every problem contains the seeds of its own solution. Unfortunately every problem also contains the seeds of an infinite number of non-solutions, so that first part really isn't super helpful.

I purchased a deck of these cards at the Blackpool convention and they were also printed offset, fortunately I bought them on the Saturday so was able to take them back to Magic Box stand on the Sunday and they promptly changed them for another set without any problem. I think Magic Box would only be too pleased to hear from you if you have a poor deck.

For those who have experience with both decks, which would you be your preference; the Symbology deck, or ESP 2? And which deck is more versatile?
Thanks, G |

Beyond ESP are easier to read from a little distance. this sounds strange but just try it. Richard Osterlind (and I'm sure Richard will confirm this himself, and hope he doesn't mind me sharing this) said he found it easier to use form a small distance, so I tried it and he was 100% on the button.
I think it is much like anything, once you practice you can do it. I've seen Michael use these and he glances momentarilly at the cards and knows what they are. Its just practice. Kennedy

Get them to place them on their flat hand or on the table. You can make this part of the apparebt test conditions to make sure you couldn't possibly cheat.

Hello,
Is the Beyond ESP 2 card with white border(margin) like Bicycle cards? I look for ESP cards with white borders/margins. I already have Bike backed ESP cards but don't like them, because spectators confuse when I use normal Biycycle deck of playing cards in my card effects. Thanx much. Sincerely, Jay |

Curious, are these cards able to be used in walkaround or table hopping or strictly a stage parlor type effect?
