Uri was on a children’s TV show this morning and was asked by the interviewer (a stuffed puppet no less) who amazed him?
His answer was David Blaine and he made reference to the amazing levitation he did in his garden. (Or did he say vegetation? No I’m almost sure he said levitation) Ken |

Blaine doing a vegetation in a garden. Maybe that could be his next publicty stunt, being buried up to his neck in a Uri's garden while dressed like a carrot.....

I just couldn't let that comment go by unsaid! I do have to remember to have Andi bring over tapes of the Brown shows so I can find somewhere to have them converted (ah, the beauty of going to a school with a huge tv/video dept.) assuming he does have them.

I watched the programme - quite interesting, nothing very new. Apart from one thing - I'd forgotten that Geller had claimed to make the ball wobble just before McAlister's penalty in the Scotland v England game of Euro '96. B*****d! I'm going to heckle next time he comes to Scotland.

<<I think Uri should've changed direction slightly more towards the motivational seminar coaching business I think he would've been really good in that area. (maybe he has?)... >>
Eh, he has. About a year ago he took it on tour, which is still continuing. Motivation is the main point(see my review and preview on Uri's site if you're interested.) The BBC programme was originally supposed to go out at Christmas, but they released it early on the back of the "Jungle" programme. Uri tells me that as a result of this resurgence in interest and all the publicity, he has a whole new audience. He now has six-year old kids stopping him and asking for his autograph. Despite a strange approach by the voice-over during the programme (the words "alleged" and "supposed" were used liberally sprinkled in front of most statements) Uri still came over as the intense, cheerful, affable, friendly chappie that he is. In my opinion, this is another programme that has done him a power of good. Those who haven't seen it yet will enjoy it, if only for the archive stuff - and a first appearance of the cheerful, ever-smiling Shipi! |

I've just noticed in the paper that Uri Geller is on the telly tonight (Sunday) - BBC2 10.30pm when he is a guest on "Dave Gorman's Important Astrology Experiment" - according to the notes in the Observer he attempts to impart psychic powers. Will be interesting to see whether Uri plays it serious serious or tongue-in-cheek serious.

Every so often I see him being mentioned, alledgedly, being seen with such and such a magician, and then sometimes there he is claiming genuine powers.
However nowadays I think he's more interested in plugging his self-improvement courses. He has been seen quite on British TV recently (and not just on "I'm a celebrity") and knowing the skilled self-publicist he is, I can't help but wonder what he is up to next? Huw, I believe he makes a brief appearance on "Dave Gorman's Important Astrological Experiment". It'll be interesting to see how he views his 'abilities' tonight. You in the position as an excellent writer (well your column in PC Plus was pretty good when I used to buy it) to perhaps secure an interview with him and perhaps carefully probe him on the subject???! Perhaps you'll be able to grab a scoop. Regards, Kris Sheglova

***! I've missed it! Any reviews of what Uri did would be much appreciated.

It was barely a cameo appearance. However he did the following things
1) Borrowed a key had Dave Gorman stroke it and claimed that it had bent (barely noticeable and any bend was a the result of the guys keys being in his pocket for extended periods of time - A quick look at my keys shows the same kind of bending) 2) Made compass the size of your fist move (wow! I wonder how he did that [sarcasm]) 3) Spoon bend and break, but the scene was heavily cut either to hide something or to shorten the clip. He didn't really claim psychic powers as-such but called himself a Paranormalist. Which is fitting...a mentalist is someone who pretends to be able to read minds, make predictions, where is I guess a paranormalist is someone who pretends to make paranormal effects happen. This appearence could have been far more interesting as Dave Gorman ended up at Geoffrey Durhams (The Great Stupendo - a fairly well known fairly camp magician in the UK) house the week before being taught how to do, yes you've guessed it, THE SPOON BEND - although I think Dave used a pre-bent spoon that was conveniently cut-in or a gaffed spoon. Dave could have really played on that, the look on Uri's face could have been a classic. Regards Kris Sheglova

Thanks for the review Kris, it certainly sounds like they missed a golden opportunity that would have made great TV, I wonder why they passed it up? It's also a pity that the host wasn't taught how to "melt", as opposed to bend a spoon, as that's almost invariably what Uri does when appearing on TV these days.

Huw, you've got me baited, although I must say handing out 6 quid for a couple of columns seems a little flamboyant...
I'm surprised you managed to squeeze Lance Burton through...and you say they pay you for this?? Regards, Kris Sheglova

AllThumbs,
Geoffrey Durham's alter ego was 'The Great Soprendo'. An earlier post mentioned Geller on a magic show with a clock. Was this the prop-like frame with four sections? Something with a clock, an ice cube, an egg and the last thing escapes me. I remember thinking at the time 'what is he doing with a prop...?' The items in the frame all went 'back-in-time' - the melted ice cube was frozen again, the live chick turned back to an egg etc etc. But the strangest thing about this particular item is that it also appeared on a Wayne Dobson show. Probably the exact same frame. Different magician though. Frank.

Brian,
That was Geller on the second series of THe Best of Magic back in 1989 or 1990. |
