I was just wondering about this effect that David performed on his unexplained forces. Is this house real or did he just make the story up?
I have a friend who told me he found this video on a couple of guys searching the house and encounter a ghost, but I haven't been able to find it. So did David Copperfield just make this story up or not? And if this video is real does anyone know where I can find it? |

David has stated that he made up the story. He found the house in an old book of pictures. He took the picture and had his crew change it up to fit the story. He then made up the story. He said that the owners of the real house actually wrote to him. They were concerned, but all they wanted was autographed pictures and stuff like that. So, yep, it's a made-up story.

Not to sound stupid or get off topic, but what was the effect for the Barclay House trick?

If I remember correctly, it was kind of like David is tied securely to a chair inside a little replica of the windows of the house (or something of the sort) that enclose him. In essence it's a makeshift room that looks spooky.
The house was supposedly haunted, so in the trick stuff is flying out from the top of the room like different items in the room that "only ghosts" could cause to fly out. David's jacket then flies out as well. The walls drop and David is still seen tied securely to the chair. Sorry if this is hard to follow. It's been a long day. TJ |

It begins as a spirit cabinet routine: David is tied and things get thrown around; next a volunteer is invited to join him inside the room, and while David is tied up, things still move, etc; then a few "ghosts" appear, trying to crab David only to disappear when the doors are opened.
Now all volunteers (three of them) go inside the room, holding curtains that are from the house-curtains fly up, doors close, sparks and explosions go off and all five doors of the prop open, all the volunteers vanished. Then, Space Ghosts-white silk things that fly around the house over the heads of the audience. Finally the volunteers appear in a large (and well-executed) shadow box type of effect (without a box).

As J already stated:
No, the story is not true. No, the house is not haunted. No, David did NOT find the house in a book. The house belongs to some folks in the Midwest, who initially had no idea the house was being aired on TV. When they approached DCDI about their house being aired on TV, David thought the owners were going to sue them. Turns out they just wanted some photos and signatures. For David talking specifically regarding this, turn to "Illusions" DVD and listen to David's commentary during the illusion. |

If you have his movie "Illusions" and watch it with the commentary, he tells you about what happen with the family and the house.
