Looked at my copy of Daryl's Rope tape to see if I wanted to sell/trade it. I became fascinated with his ring on rope effects.

What do I use for a ring? I am not looking to spend a lot here, the ring itself is ungimmicked. Have you found them @ walmart or dollar stores?

Try tack shops - stores that sell equestrian supplies - and look for harness rings. They should have various sizes, sometimes in both chrome and brass.

Tack shops are great but if you don't have one in your area you might try a Craft store or a well stocked Hardware store.
