Any hints on where to find the jumping discs Maven refers to in PRISM? Checked out Edmunds Scientific, but they don't seem to carry them anymore. Did a search of the Café, and they're mentioned, but no luck sourcing them.
Any hints? Thanks Scott |

If you get an overseas novelty supply catalog, you should be able to get them by the gross.

Many years ago they were selling them at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. I don't know if they still have them.

This has been discussed quite a bit and I don't believe anyone has come up with a supplier. I had one at one time (can't find it anymore) for the effect and I bought it from Johnson-Smith, but they no longer appear to sell them.
They slightly resembled a quarter, and you wouldn't want anyone to see it close up! Terry

To make a very long story short, to my knowledge, these are no longer produced. The Exploratorium in San Francisco definitely does not have them. If you really want one of these, then you'll very probably have to find a used one. They are in the closets and drawers of many people across the world. Use your abilities to find what you want and to negotiate for transfer of ownership. That's how I found mine a few years ago.

Sorry, Allen - American Science Center in Chicago had them as recently as last month.

Scott, I'll be in NY in a week and can check on a source for you then.
Everyone else, they are still indeed available--you need to get them from overseas. |

Remember getting them as a kid from Edmund Scientific. We used to put them on the teacher's desk and then wait in gleeful anticipation.

Another alternative is the rubber or latex discs of the same concept...turn inside out and they flip after several seconds. However...I couldn't find those easily either. Any ideas anyone?

Yep..saw this exact item on ebay. A bag for 5.00 about a month ago. That is the only place I've seen them.

Myster, were they listed as "jumping discs?" - want to make sure I search correctly (if I track down a bag of them, will be happy to share the loot with others who are interested)

Hi Bimetal Jumping Disc fans !
Got an idea for a trick with the jumping discs. Got an idea from Max Maven's prism series (which is GREAT by the way ) who suggested that folks here are discussing the disc. Looking for some the size of a quarter. Any body know who might manufacture them ? Maybe looking to buy in volume but would like to buy at least one to see if my idea works. Thanks in advance for any input. Big Gerry biggerry@cox.net |

Search the café for discs. I believe that "howdoidisconnect" found, took orders here and shipped as late as a few weeks ago.

Jumping Disc fans!! Sad news. Lost to History !! I found out the demize (sp) of the jumping discs that Edmunds Scientific used to sell. Here is the article on the "poppers".
Save those poppers! For years we have given away "poppers" in our courses. These bi-metal discs, a great example of Thermal Thinking®, jump a couple of feet in the air when thermally stressed. If you are the proud owner of a "popper," you may want to tuck it away somewhere safe. It is now a collectible! We were saddened to discover recently that the company that sold them, Edmund's Scientific, no longer does so. In fact, the person who made them-and who held the patent on them-passed away, and the machinery with which he punched out millions of these wonderful little discs has been sold for scrap. The world is a sadder place for the loss of the famous jumping discs. Its a *** shame !!! Big Gerry |
