Just purchased 90 of these each with instructions (Edmund Scientific). Will sell 5 dozen or so for 12.00 dollars per dozen not including shipping.

Johnson Smith used them in a trick called 'The Atomic Spot' about 50 years ago. The disc was sandwiched, hidden, between two thin and dense sheets of 5-7" cardboard. A 'spot' above the disc was the purported Atomic Spot. A borrowed coin was set on the spot and covered with an inverted glass.

A slight pressure on the glass would pop the disc and the coin would fly into the air, clanging against the glass. It was very surprising. At this point, all could be examined, as the disc was now 'unset' and nothing was to be found. To repeat, you reset the disc by pressing the card, at the disc spot, between your fingers with your thumb.

It was great little trick and should be remade today. It sold for either $.50 or $75....good times.

It seems that those discs behave differently from make to make and also depending on the temperature of the environment.
For example I have one and I have to heat it enough by rubbing with my fingers. Thus, the effect with the cardboard would be almost impossible.
Dunninger is said that he sold an effect with this special disc!

Indeed. The routine was titled "Brain Thrust". Quite rare. I also discussed some use of the disk in "Dunninger's Brain Busters".

I'm thinking the Atomic Spot probably worked because of the concavity snapping rather than by heat. The pop was under your control: press the glass down, the coin flew.
