Hello.
I'm very interested in this new book that came out called 7 Deceptions by Luke Jermay. This book looks really great and has alot of great sounding effects in it I would like to learn and do. Any info/reviews on this book would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance, Mack Magic

I just got Seven Deceptions along with The Black Envelope, Kickback, Fisher's book "The Paper Engine," and Lee Asher's Pulp Friction and his *** notes yesterday. I liked everything but "The Seven Deceptions." The ads for it sounded great, but for me it was a waste of money as I most likely will never use the methods the tricks depend on. They do not work 100 percent of the time. You must have a forceful personality and great spectator management skills. For me, it was a wasted purchase, but for someone else they might love it. It's just not my cup of tea.

7 Deceptions is not a book that can be instantly turned into miracles, but rather a book that needs some real work to truly find the benefit of the effects.
If you're a card man - not gonna be a good book for you! If, however, you're a fan of things such as Wonder Words, Banachek's wonderful work on Psch, Docc Hilford's Real Mind Reading Video, etc., then 7 Deceptions will offer you more thinking along those lines and really pushing the envelope of exactly how far you can take things. Like much of the work mentioned above, it is an either love or hate book. It is, however, full of material that I use and enjoy using. Kind Regards, Luke. |

Luke--if you're going to comment on your own book, it would probably be best to sign your full name, not just your initial. It's a bit misleading otherwise...

Never meant to mislead anyone...simply a habit.
I was just pointing out that my book will have a very specific market. Luke. |

Your book is full of extremely deceptive thinking, Luke. This is the type of work that only experienced, hard working performers will likely understand and use.
Thanks for sharing |

Hello.
Thank you everyone for your input on this. Ok, that's what I kinda of thought the book would be like. I usually don't do any mind trick, "deceptive" effects, etc., but I thought of maybe sometime trying to learn some to add in the mix of my act or just to have some extra knowledge on these type of things. I'm not a "forceful" magician at all, but I'm the type that's willing to work hard to learn something new. So maybe one day I might get this book to use for somethings and the others to have some extra knowledge. Thanks everyone for your opinion. Sincerely, Mack Magic

I've got my copy of the 7 Deceptions and I think it is a wonderful book! For people who are searching for fast, easy magic, you can forget about it! You will curse and swear. BUT for mentalism gurus and people who are in search for real magic, this is IT!!! Suitable only for those who love the works of Banachek, Kenton and Derren. This is 21st century mentalism !

Sounds like some psychological manipulations involved here. I like this sort of stuff. Just to check, did it ever work for you so far?
thanks |

Thanks everyone for your replies.
I finally decided to get this and should get it in the next few days. I'll post my own view of it soon. I was just wondering for the people that do have this book, what do you like or is your favorite rountine/effect or part of this book? Thanks, Mack Magic

Are the techniques 100% reliable? Some one told me there's this risk when you use it. I'm kinda afraid of such risks.Sometimes, screwing up after a long and great patter totally ruins you.

This is an excellent investment. Powerful stuff in the right hands, but not for the inexperienced or 'safe' performer. I like the way Luke pushes toward and over the edge. He likes to live dangerously. Grown-up mentalism without compromise!
The publication could have been a little more sophisticated in its design. The clip-art is passe and adds nothing.

Hi Everyone,
Just wondering what you would recommend by purchase first - 7 Deceptions or Banachek's Psychological Subtleties. Are the books similar? |

As the aurthor of the book 7 Deceptions I would personally reccomend you get Steves book first. It opens a wealth of information to you. This information is pushed very far in my own book.
The effects inmy book are all stand along and complete in the text, but the insights you gain from Steves book are priceless. Luke Jermay. |

I got the book and my review is such:
At first glance I didn't think the book was all that fantastic, but after reading the Forwards I realised what Kenton and Luke were aiming at and I took a liking to the book. My advice is, if you're looking for a book with knock out tricks...this isn't it, DO NOT BUY IT. But if you're looking for a unique angle of magic that is rarely touched, then THIS IS IT. This is the kind of thing that would fool seasoned magicians. In this book holds the methods to many psychological subtleties that create an EXTREMELY magical effect...I mean, imagine asking someone to look at THEIR palm and you tell them that the lines are moving...AND THEY SEE IT. The power of psycholigcal suggestion, that's what this book is about...not about finger-flinging, passes and colour changes...just hard core psychological forcing, suggestions and a whole lot of fun! If you think about the effect it has on the spectators...it's well worth the book. This book may be useless to one magician and priceless to another...it's up to you in the end... Cheers, Logan P.S. Some of the material MIGHT NOT be practical, i.e. you can't do it on the spot.
You've been hit by, you've been struck by, a smooth criminal.

I have just finished reading Luke's book, and I was very excited by it. It advances a very subtle sort of magic: one which may not work a hundred percent of the time, but which has the potential of greatly enriching your sense of what can be accomplished through language and acting. For those who may be leery of the risk involved in some of the effects, I suggest that this may be a good reason to buy the book and work with the ideas for awhile. Luke's work just might be the thing that helps you look at your work in a fresh way.

Just a quick comment. 7 Deceptions is aimed at a specific market i.e. mentalists. Magicians (who don't perform mentalism) often make the mistake of purchasing mentalist materials with the wrong sort of thinking:
They read the description and think "wow, that's a great trick, I'd love to do that" unaware that it really is only geared for a specific market segment. The descriptions seem fantastical...and yes they are, to those who are used to going to the nearest magic dealer to buy the latest gimmick. Mentalism or magicians who perform mentalism have to learn a specific set of skills. Mentalists (or magicians who perform mentalism) read the description and know exactly what sort of caveats are involved. With this sort of thing they know: a) You need certain pre-requisite experience. b) You need brass balls to pull things like this off. Any lack of confidence - well it just aint going to work for you. c) They accept that its not going to be sure-fire, that its not going to work with everybody everytime. This is difficult for some magicians to accept as the in-built response is (quite understandably): If it doesn't work all the time, I'm not going to perform it until it does work all the time. Mentalists except this with the knowledge that when it does work, it is very strong indeed. They have the experience to deal with when it doesn't work and know how to routine such an effect so that it doesn't reflect badly on their performance with the use of various strategies and moving to a sure-fire effect. Before anyone thinks this is an "anti-conjouring/magician" post. I want to make it quite clear that this is not the case. In fact I am quite envious at the dexterity and skills of the more traditional magician. I thoroughly enjoy a good magic act. It just doesn't suit my personality to perform it. My aim is to inform those, that don't have much of an interest in mentalism, to save their hard earnt money on stuff like this because you will probably find it of little use and disappointing. If you do have more interest (other than "that would be a great killer trick") great, you'll probably appreciate this kind of publication. A further quick analogy would be a mentalist who thought that a particular card trick sounded excellent, bought it, and found that it required a severe amount of knuckle busting to perform it. It would be of little use to the mentalist. Regards, Kris Sheglova
The above is all rubbish, except that which you chose to believe
