I think that ran it's course. I'd be surprised if it happened again.

Is this guy the same as "The Mystery Magician" from the cheesy mid-80's VHS tape of the same name? Or is it a different masked magician?

There have already been two masked magicians on TV under the title of Breaking The Magicians' Code: Magic's Greatest Secrets Revealed. Valentino was the first and he exposed illusions. Then another masked magician exposed street magic. I don't know the identity of the second masked magician. Some well-posted magicians believe that he may have been an actor. Does anyone know? In addition, Herbert Becker independently exposed magic on the Maury Povich show and he did not wear a mask. Becker's expose was followed by the publication of a book. I did not know that there may be the possibility of another maskedd magician
I currently write about the history of magic for Northern Peaks, the official journal of the Canadian Association of Magicians. My articles appear in every issue. I normally write in English although I did submit one article in French.

I wonder what would happen if the masked magician was locked in a room full of magicians, ex. Copperfield, Burton, and others.

It's completely possible because if they put it on, people will watch it. There's always a desire to "know how it's done"

I'm not condoning what the masked magician(s) have done or are going to do... In fact I think they are wrong for exposing the secrets of those effects. But I tend adopt the same attitude toward this as what Fitzkee mentions in, "Showmanship for Magicians": The secret is not nearly as important as whether or not the audiences receive the effect positively.
In other words... Are your audiences entertained by your magic? If so then you don't have anything to worry about. No, I don't go around exposing the secrets of the effects I perform, but I've had my share of spectators who did know how I was doing some of my magic. They were still entertained and they were still amazed. If anything I cast some major doubt on their part because the effect was so well scripted, practiced and presented, they went away wondering if their theory was right. So what's my point? My point is that as magicians we should not expose, nor condone exposing the secrets of our trade, because it does take away the "Magic" from the eyes of the audience. Yet, at the same time, we need to lighten up a bit and remember that the secret is not the most important part of the effect. It is the performer that is the most important part of the effect. |

I have two questions. How many of you watched the other two masked magician specials??? And, How many of you will watch if another is aired??? I actually watched both specials, as ashamed of myself as I am to admit. However I do admit it. And to be honest, although I wont set my TVO up to record it, if a new one is on and I'm in the room, I'll probably watch it. By the way here is a good read I saw on a local website: http://magicfest.com/fox.html

Quote: Absolutly agree... people forgets with time the secrets they've learned in specials like this, but their final impresion is that magic is for childish people. Our job is not only make very effects, but to make that impression dissapear and the only real tool we have is our own performances. WE should be magical, not our effects.

Yes, I will watch it. So I know what my prospective audience watch too.
Some times I wonder, why we, as magician, condemn the mask magician. Because lay people get the secret for free, but we should buy it and some of it very expensive? Because he/she break the magician code? How about several cheap magic books or cheap tricks sold by general books stores or novelties stores or magic stores? They also exposing magic tricks! Sorry, I don't want arguing about the pro or con of mask magician! When I see a magician doing a trick, which I know how to do that, I still can admire how good he/she do it. Some of lay people do as I do, but some of them heckle the magician and expose the tricks. So I agree that we should be magical & entertaining, then the heckler forget what he/she want to say! In certain cases (not all, obviously) their having seen these specials can make certain effects even stronger. Case in point, my audience may remember seeing the Linking Rings exposed...but when I apparently have them examine ALL of the rings during the routine, they're even more baffled. It's like the sucker routine for the Silk to Egg -- only MM has previously led them down the garden path for you. I also recall seeing a magician years ago levitate a piano. He used a variation on the Masked Magician's "Hyster" version. When asked by the host to open the rear curtains, the magician ordered it done (the gimmick being in the fly gallery by now). He knew what the audience would be thinking and used it to fool them even more. Granted, these are a few special cases, but if you don't know what info is being put out there, you won't know if your audience is onto you before you start. I certainly don't agree with him...but I'll be watching for other reasons. Dan Wolfe, aka. "The Amazing EARL" |

When I was a kid, I thought it was all over once I purchased the Marshall Brodine magic kit....but no, magic has a life of it's own and will never be squished out of exsistance. Many tricks can be revealed, but the basics can be reformatted into a better tricks with the same principles.
Magic is a mysterious subject and with all the wonderful magicians we have here, Those ideas will never leave,...they just keep getting better. |
