Has anyone found some cool, tough or exotic looking scissors for cut and resotred rope routines? Something that looks like it came from the Orient or South America would fit my persona. OR something a biker would carry.
Of course the problem is that no on carries scissors around with them... I used to be a medic and am considering using trauma shears. Anyone worked with those? |

I use a switchblade. Now that's something not many will carry around with them!

10cardsdown beat me to it - I too use a switchblade during my rope routine.

I would love to use a knife, but figured it wouldn't cut fast and efficiently enough. Does it?

Who says you're actually cutting the rope?

Just make sure they are sharp. It's bad form to struggle cutting the rope.

Um, I say I'm cutting the rope. I already have the routine, and I'm pretty sure I cut the rope in it...

Hey Mike,
You can find them.....mostly in flea markets in the States. You have to ask though, because they are usually hidden out of sight. I found one at the Daytona flea market for ten bucks. John |

Mike, they are definitely illegal in Canada.
Subsection 84(1) of the Criminal Code of Canada defines "prohibited weapon" includes the following: "prohibited weapon" means (a) a knife that has a blade that opens automatically by gravity or centrifugal force or by hand pressure applied to a button, spring or other device in or attached to the handle of the knife, or Keep out of trouble! Joshua,
Check out some kitchen shears, some of those look kind of tough. Some have curved blades etc. Just do a search on the net for kitchen shears and you will dozens of models to look at. They cut really well too.

Oriental scissors? My wife sews. Three of her ten pairs of normal looking scissors were made in China. Is that Oriental enough?
Chinese Bonsai scissors fit from a cultural standpoint, but they aren't flashy: http://www.natashascafe.com/html/scissors.html?GGp From a performance standpoint, there's a big difference between trauma shears and a switchblade. Try this site for a variety of knives: http://www.knife-depot.com/knives-244.html?src=gaw Hope that helps.

Although switch blades are illegal, assited opening knives are not.
Take a look at these" http://www.knivesplus.com/SG-98S-SOG.HTML http://www.knivesplus.com/buck-knife-tempest-bu-295blx.html if you get a knife that is partially serrated you should have no trouble cutting rope.

Joshua,
The scissors I have used for years are really made for chicken meat processors. They are a satin finish and would likely cut airplane cable! I have four of my original five pairs left and would not trade them for anything. They cut rope like butter and then will cut a playing card with equal ease. The second best, I bought from Tandy Leather Company in the 70s for $35. They call them Super Shears. They are for cutting thick leathers. They are silver with black handles. Using a knife would never work in any of my rope routines. Bob Magic By Sander |

I don't know if this will suit your tastes, but I use a pair of scissors that are twice the size of a normal pair (they look massive); they are also very heavy (probably 4-5 X the weight of normal sewing scissors). They can cut through rope easier than any I've ever used. I bought them at Restoration Hardware, and have never seen them anywhere else.

What about Butterfly knife, I heard that's banned now too in US. Does anyone know? I don't to want to get fine for using that in my show.

Hey Mike,
Remember you're bringing them in to Canada....they don't care if you have weapons, as long as you don't have cigarettes or booze!!!!! |
