For beginners there is the Ammar DVD, the Roth DVDs and D. Stone's DVDs. There are nice reviews on http://www.coinvanish.com that you should check out. In my opinion Ammar is the best value for money, or is ideal if you prefer learning from books but there's just that one little thing that you'd like to be shown because you're not too sure how to understand the book. The Roth DVD's are very good, have very nice material and he teaches it well. Stone's DVDs seem a little more advanced than the Roth/Ammar stuff, without a solid CP you won't be doing too many of his routines.
As always, if you want to do coin magic, the *hardcover* Bobo (not the cheap paperback Dover one) is a must (you can get it from magicbooks by post, or from kbmagic.com - both ship internationally). Supplement it with DVDs if neccessary, I'd say Ammar if you're short on cash, otherwise get the Roth DVDs (you don't have to get all at once). |

I love David Roth a lot! His teaching is so great that even a really slow learner can learn one or two tricks after watching his video.
Someone may say that David Stone is even better, I have no objection. Yet, I believe they both are very advanced coin magicians, Stone is thought to be slightly better just because his coin tricks are more VISUAL and I think that's important to laymen and people who are not in the magic circle. I used to think that they are the best until I saw Bobo's performance in the COIN Classic DVD vol.1. I think he is the real master! Enjoy! Hirase
In love with magic!

If I upset any one I am sorry...
I just look for a higher standard than what I saw and they are teaching the same ideas as were out there. I am very sorry if I made any one upset at all. I am bitter cuz local hack stole all the effects I perform and made a dvd. Just cuz he could. Our jobs are to teach and guide, not to steal and mislead. Once again I am a bit scorn.

I'm a bit lost as to why you are upset, Tobias. You seemed to fly off the handle over nothing there? Maybe the thread got moderated or something.
I'd second the advice about Bobo's and Ammar. There's a lot in Bobo's but some of the descriptions of the mechanics are a bit weak for my liking. They give the basics but not the real work on a move. Go to Dan Watkin's site to see how detailed descriptons of moves should be done. |

No, I just flew off the handle. I said sorry.
Dan is an awesome guy and his site has helped loads of people. Starting there would be a big help.

Gotta jump in here, guys!
If you had to have ONE DVD set for learning coin magic...(gosh, I HATE revealing this, as it's my best collection)...it's gotta be Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights by Michael Rubinstein. You start with #1...learn it sleight by sleight..by the time you've finished #3, you're ready for Knockout Coin Magic, by Michael Rubinstein. Before anyone asks, no I don't know Mike personally, he does not reimburse me for promotion, and I wish I could keep all this to myself, but for the sake of the Art, you SHOULD know about it at least. I just bought the 3-Vol VHS set of Encyclopedia of Coin Sleights for $30 from L & L Publishing, and then got the three-tape set of Knockout for $30 as well...$10 apiece! Want the link? http://www.llpub.com/zenshop/index.php?m......p;page=4 Unfortunatley, looks like the Encyclopedia VHS special is history, but Knockout is still available. Hope this is helpful! Doug |

Actually, if you read the question, the person wants easy coin magic and there is some great stuff around that will give you a jump start.
Ron Bauers - Gadabout Coins (also get his Owed To Poker Dan.) Peter Marruci's ungimmicked Scotch & Soda. Sankey's Holy Moly, which also from Penguin comes with a very nice/free effect. Also some very nice stuff on Greg Wilson's, On the Spot. DO NOT get an Okito Box - they are not easy utility items to use WELL. IF you get the bug, then take the advice above, and be prepared to spend a LOT of time practicing.
catch you later

Bobo's book is the bible. True and true. But reading it is not the easiest thing in the world. Maybe its just me, but reading a book on magic is not as rewarding or easily understandable as watching someone do the trick, then explaining how it was done. For that, I went with David Roth. I have three of his videos on "expert coin magic." The first one shows the absolute basics and then each video builds on that experience. I also have his video on the Okito box, which is really nicely done and will help you develop a solid routine.
Also card tricks might be easier for someone starting out. I don't know, I'm not much into card magic, so your mileage may vary. For a good all-around presentation of magic, check out Doc Eason's stuff. His bar magic is some of the best I've seen and he's a pretty cool guy to boot. |

I'm a big reader and like to learn most of my magic that way. I have to admit, though, that as a beginner in coin magic, I didn't understand Bobo until I had watched the beginning Roth tapes. Now reading Bobo makes a lot more sense to me, and I'm able to appreciate it a lot more.

I'm not surprised others have difficulties with Bobo. There's so much material which is isn't always explained in the fullest depth. But, like a vintage wine, if you savour it and sip it slowly, it will bring rewards.

Its isn't necessarly new material but it is definately different than any other coin magic video out there. The coin magic I do is usually done to music or silently. I can do the magic with patter but choose not to because I do a lot of work in bars, nightclubs, and very noisy conditions. So the coin magic isn't necessarly new but presented in a different manner. The sleights are for beginner to advanced. I do add my own touch to a lot of the material. I am not claiming that this is the best thing since sliced bread, or that the material is "NEW and Ground breaking", I just tried to put a video out that I think might have helped me out when I first started. I had a lot of difficulties with bobo in the beginning. Kudos to those who did not have the luxuary of video and dvds, but still learned the moves and sleights taught in bobo. I hope this post helps some of the questions. Later........
Vandy the second edition isn't released to the general public yet. There is only two place to get it. Me and http://www.Trickmastermagic.com Other than that I am waiting for the printers to finish the dvd's. It is the same dvd just different artwork. The artwork is geared more towards the "commercial" audiences. I figured the first edition's artwork would be appreciated by those who got there first....if that makes sence.......If you want one Vandy just let me know....Later...again |

It seems like everyone recommends Bobo, but personally I never got much from it other then an occasional reference. So I tried the Michael Ammar's 'Intro to coin magic'. It was good but the effects were a little ho hum, but you do need a foundation to build upon, so it served it's purpose.
But it was the David Stone Vol 1 dvd that I enjoyed the most. He emphasises routines , then the sleights that are needed to perform the routine. That is what appealed to me. I love doing his spellbound coin to pen bit. It shocks people. It's like learing guitar. If someone shows you how to play an Bb,F, and C chord, that's great. But then your told that F,Bb, and C are the chords for the verse of 'Hey Jude', now it's exciting and fun. The chords have a purpose. |
