I think the discussions on methodology are worth buying the books alone.
In terms of tricks, it depnds on your style. However, Mr Wonder does cater for most styles in the book; from close-up to stage effects. I do agree with previous comments: if you're interested in being serious about magic BUY THEM! |

Gerard.... you have way too much time on your hands....
The books are great. The tricks/routines are of the best caliber and the essays that are squeezed in between them are great! Tommy's passion for magic leaps out from every page.

The personalize nature of Mr. Wonder's tricks is a frequent topic of conversation on these posts. Some people have expressed dissapointment with the Visions of Wonder video set on account of the "impracticality" of many of the effects. I haven't seen the videos, but I am interested in the books, and I was wondering whether someone could tell me about the percentage of tricks in the two volume book set that are "workers". Thanks!

Most of us will never likely put in the work for "Ring, Watch and Wallet", "Rubik's Card" or "Nest of Boxes". I barely have the talent to open a dvd box. But, don't discount the lessons in each of these effects. You should find inspiration in his quest to perfect these tricks. He's stripped away any suspicious moves and hidden the work behind normal gestures. He's done this after a lot of work and thought. Watch these over and over again.
The rest of the dvd's contain effects you and I could do with practice. There is preparation in most of the effects, but not much "shop time". Each effect benefits from the same careful thought process that Tommy applied to the above effects. My opinion?.....85% of these effects are some of the strongest, finely tuned "workers" we'll ever see. The other three or four items blow me away, but are a bit beyond my capabilities as a craftsman. Buy these dvd's. You'll enjoy them. |

I thought it extremely important that I 'bump' this thread.
If you do not have these books, you cannot even begin to think that you are a proffesional in my opinion. They are written, and inspire and teach as wonderfully as the feeling one has of wonderment, when watching Tommy Wonder. Jon Hackett P.S. I don't agree with ome of what he says, and although perform versions of methodologies he uses don't perform any of the effects, yet, ever year I re read these books at least once because they ARE that important.

I agree... I'd go so far as to ay they are my choice for the very best books on magic ever written. I was surprised at how many of the effects were actually quite practical and workable, in contrast to what I'd heard before (not to say that many of them are far beyond what I'd ever be able to use). The essays are great, but the real importance is in seeing how one of magics greatest thinkers goes about creating a routine.
Get them soon, because I understand the current printing is almost sold out, and they likely will not be reprinted. -Rob |

Brent at the magic apple (a good source) told me that they were getting towards the end of the current printing and that he didn't think there'd be another... I don't think he was saying that they'd be sold out in the next couple of months, but just that one should get them sooner rather than later.
