Hey all,
I'm looking for info on some pyrokinesis effects. I have one now that involves mixing two chemicals to ignite a book of matches, but I'm not a big fan of transporting the chemicals around. I know I've heard of some electronic devices out there but haven't been able to track them down. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! |

Richard Osterlind has an effect in his Perfected Center Tear booklet that involves the growing and shrinking of the flame on a lighter. I haven't tried it, but according to Mr. Osterlind it is quite stunning.
Another thought, although this may not fit with your dislike of chemicals and such, but you could try working with sodium or potasium. They will ignite when exposed to oxygen, allowing for some interesting options. Hope this helps, good luck. Chris Toomey |

Thanks Chris! Now I have a reason to get that book.
I've used chemicals in the past. They are unreliable and hard to travel with. Sean Field's has hinted that he is coming out with the exact effect I'm looking for. Can't wait to see it. |

Richard's effect is quite astonishing. I have seen demonstrations of horizontal manipulations of flame. They might have been done using sources of gas. A very interesting variation would be making fire travel on a surface.

There is an electronic version somewhere, cannot remember fully but it used an ash tray I believe and was priced about $450

Some sugar and a drop of a rather innocuous liquid can do the job for you

I've seen the ashtray version at Tannen's a while back. Also, I looked at the new effect 'Flare'. But that just seems to be a variation on the auto lite match.

Yah, it was a while ago. I never got it as I didn't want to have to walk around with my own ashtray.

The method used in self-lighting candles (The Wizards' Journal #4 on my site) can also be used to silently start fires for other purposes. Instead of putting the devices into a candle form, they might be used in an ash tray or bowl, on inside a candleSTICK, where you first remove the candle and just use the pedestal as a place to "focus your power."
