Did anyone in the UK see this programme on BBC one around 10pm of the 14 of feb??? I didn't watch it but just wondered what other peoples opinions where.
It was all about a girl who apparently had X-Ray eyes and could give people infomation about their medical condtition. Scientists where putting her to the test. She failed but she still claims that she is real, Im sure derren also did this on his last TV special! Anyway here's the article if you want to have a read: http://english.pravda.ru/science/19/94/377/14551_XRay.html

Matt - I saw her TV appearance...it was fascinating to watch. Alas, nothing conclusive...
It still left you wondering if it was maybe her "ticket" out of there, or whether she genuinely believed in what she was doing. |

I saw the prog about her on Channel 4 at about 9pm. And that article is VERY misinformed.
When doing her stuff not under test conditions, she was diagnosing people within about 10 minutes. Under test conditions it took her 1 hour and 20 minutes to do ONE person! And it was hardly test conditions. The patients were merely blindfolded (so they didn't know she was looking at them, and so couldn't give off any unconcious signals) and weren't allowed to speak to her. The article also talks about an appendix scar. She was actually asked to point out the person who had their appendix removed. However, she claimed that appendices grow back, to which the doctor present, looking baffled, simply said they do not grow back. After she insisted some people in Russia did have appendices grow back, she was told the patient who had the appendix removed would also have a scar. But she was still asked to find the patient with the misssing appendix, NOT the scar. Dr Wiseman did make a good point; if she was able to pick out scars, then why couldn't she pick out the guy who had the plate in his head? From her performance, she screams fraud to me. |

Now I can find a date for my friend, Superman. He would dig a girl with X-ray eyes just like him.

She's an obvious fraud, one in a long line of "magnetic" people, people with X-ray vision, telekinetic spoon benders, "thoughtographers," etc. Their abilities always disappear once subjected to proper testing. The woo-woo crowd are usually gung-ho to have their prodigies tested and validated...until they inevitably fail these tests, at which point the True Believers start to backpedal, accusing the testers of being close-minded, etc.

But can you be sure Mike?
That she is a fraud? And that proper testing was done? Cheers Jack |

I suspect - she's good at cold reading.....but I like to keep an open mind |

I think that maybe she really believed that she could do what she claimed despite using inate reading techniques. One thing which definately helped her cause, in my opinion, is that fact that she looked so young and innocent....
Interesting point that her "meal ticket" was to study "real" medicine. If I had powers like that I would not want to study that bolony, I would spread the word about my uncanny powers.... |

Gambituk1 - when you say "meal ticket". If you're referring to my earlier comment about her "ticket out of there", I was'nt talking about her possible study of "real" medicine.
If she goes onto study "real" medicine as you call it - good luck to her. It's not an easy profession to pursue at the best of times - more so when you have very little to start with. Just my thoughts... |

Well first off to all believers:
There are no eye specimen in all the species of animals that have X-ray powers. It feels good to read in superhero books. And with the human eye it is not possible to really have x-ray powers. The functioning of eye is such that the light falls on retina of the eye and that stimulates the eye nerve cells and they pass this along to brain and then we get the vision. OK, now heres how X-ray works. X-rays should pass through a substance to get the image on the film. That means it is not reflected as in the case of usual vision. It goes through the body part and not reflected like usual light. There is no way this is percieved by the eye to get an image. Unless you can be on both sides, that is 1) Send the X-rays and 2) Be on the reciever side to accept the X-rays. So this is just fiction. I have tried my best to keep things simple here. Now the truth. One of the greatest mentalists, Benachek, fooled a whole school full of scientists and researchers for a long period of time, right here in St. Louis ( where I stay). He could had easily continued this for a long time. Then we would have had a real Geller amongst us. I am still serious about getting a date for my friend Superman. He is lonely these days, now that Catwoman got a bad shot.
To believe is Magic.
