I would say it's more advanced work. It all depends on what books you have at this point....

I think it leans towards the advanced in terms of the chops required to execute effects contained within. Wesley James also states up front that the hobbyist may find his book "too serious, too detailed and too analytical."

I am a hobbyist, and a long ways from advanced, but found the book to be a stimulating read. The analytics on various techniques (palming, lifts, shuffles, etc.) made the book more than worthwhile for me, an "intermediate hobbyist."

My guess is that the book would be a valuable read for you now, and would someday become an invaluable resource when you reach a more advanced level.

Hi Andrew. And say hi to Malaysia for me! (If you yell loud enough, some of my relatives in Shah Alam might even hear you.)

I'm an absolute nothing when it comes to card technique but I found James' book completely fascinating. More than any other magic book I've ever read, "Enchantments" really analyzes James' thought processes when it comes to creating, refining and routining a trick. Even if you aren't able to replicate James' finger-flinging, I think that you'd get something just from dipping into James' little gray cells.

And if you're at an intermediate level, you'll find a lot to challenge you there.
