I've been very lucky in my magic purposes lately, so I suppose it is time for me to pick up the inevitable disappointment. I couldn't find another thread about this booklet, so I thought I'd post my views. It's a new release, according to Murphy's, and I picked up my copy from Hocus Pocus. (Local dealer did not have it in stock.)
R3 is the "ultimate ring and lace routine". What you get for your approx $20 is about 7 pages describing Perdigon's audience-tested routine. Some observations: - Unfortunately, it's a gimmicked effect. If you don't have the gimmick, you'll have to make or buy one. This is not mentioned anywhere in the book's description, so beware. I think it occurred to the publisher that this was a problem after the fact, because the booklet includes a half-page insert that provides this info and suggests a commercial source. That this was omitted from the booklet proper might indicate how little prep went into its production. - I have no doubt the routine is audience-tested. It is well staged and flows nicely. However, there is no discussion of the thinking or key points behind the routine. It's simply described factually and the student is left to discover for himself where the refined and important points occur. - I like that no patter or presentation is given, aside from one audience-abusing quip, but because there's no discussion of the thinking, the booklet is very thin and the writing cold. - The written descriptions are clear enough, but the instructional design of the booklet is non-existent. Descriptions and illustrations do not appear anywhere near each other, making the book difficult to use. The author is aware of this, a joke is made about the "words getting ahead of the pictures" so it's a shame that the problem wasn't addressed instead of being shrugged off. - Most of the illustrations are usable, but are not professionally done. If you already have the props, this is worth considering, but seems overpriced given the production values. If you're not willing to use a gimmick, then don't bother. Every phase of the routine requires it. |
