Even though I was inspired to go into mentalism by Annemann and his writings, I would have to agree with those that state 13 Steps and Practical Mental Effects, while useful, are dated. Remember what Nevil Maskelyne said, "Magic can not stand still. It must either advance with the times, or fall behind."

I will list the top books (mentalism and related) published in the 21st century, IMHO.

1. Maximum Entertainment
2. Mentalism Inc.
3. Peek Performances
4. Stunners Plus (yes, a reprint, but new material is inside)
5. Prism (another reprint but of hard to find material)
6. The Artful Mentalism of Bob Cassidy (see above)

I refer to the top two on a nearly monthly basis even though I have read them several times. They are the two best books published for someone interested in performing mentalism. I am certain that someone who already works in this capacity would have a different opinion.

I don't have time to read for inspiration...I'm too busy doing shows with what I learned from those two books, my friend.

Quartermaine, Of course the book is dated, the material is still fully workable though, just change the patter. Cards themselves could be considerd dated , they have been around a few centurys now,but it's what you do with them that counts.

I think that the top 10 books would be a personal thing to each individual depending on where you are in your career and where your heading.
What may be high on my list may not be on your list at all.
Of course there are the cornerstones as well as the foundations which will never go out of style but rather they will be kept alive by new and inovative approaches.
And then there are the relatively new authors whom are too numerous to list here and whose works are also very inspiring.
If I told you that the book Passages by Gail Sheehey was high on my list you'd probably think, "That's not a mentalism book"...... but isn't it?

There are some great Mentalism books available free at your local library in the Psychology Section

I have to agree with MR Black, there is a well known highly revered book that I can barely get a workable effect out of yet it is always on the highest reguard list of most Mentalist, and to be honest the authour is a wonderful and really likeable person, his effects just don't suit me.

Here are my top 5 favorites after year 2000 in no particular order
Psychological Subtleties
Theater of the mind
Maximum Entertainment
Peek performances
The Book of Haunted Magick

And a bonus : "How to talk to Anyone"
An incredible book on tips on how to interact with people.
This book is a treasure in the hands of an entertainer, specially a mentalist.
And no, you will not find it in your regular magicshop

Actually Psychological Subtleties is Copywrited for 1998 and Theater of the Mind came out in 1999 (but we won't hold that against you Smile )
