Hi. I do Michael Ammar's Silk to egg from his book in my kid's show. As for the spot on the real egg, I can't find anything that will stick to a real egg. Avery spots, double stick tape, etc. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I use a small corner of a silk.

I do silk in egg all the time at indoor events and even at outdoor festivals where the temperature is always changing. I will let you in on a golden secret I came up with just out of utter frustration at a festival one afternoon.
I too had the avery adhesive spots and then realized that if your egg is very cold, or it is hot and humid outside, the spot will never adhere right to the egg. I was so frustrated that I tried everything from tape etc. to get it to work. Then I took a step back and realized I was overlooking the obvious solution. I now use rubber cement. It sounds easy but man does it work every single time no matter what temperature or where you are at. Just put a dab on the egg and put some on the sticker as well. Let them both air dry first. Then simply adhere the spot to the egg and press down gently. The rubber cement will adhere the sticker well to the egg and it will hold with no problems for you. It also peels off very easily. The great thing about the rubber cement is that it rubs right off. Once you peel the sticker off, if there is any left, you just rub it across with your finger or thumb and the egg can be handed out for examination if you wanted to. Give it a try as it has been the answer for me when I experienced the same problems. I love doing this effect and had to figure a way to make it more full proof. Hope it helps you. Kyle

I was about the say the same thing, rubber cement I have used too. I think taking the sticker off and perhaps placing it on your self is a real seller in this trick.

Ken, Great minds think alike. hehe. That is exactly what I do. I use rubber cement. Then when I peel off the sticker, I purposely place it and stick it on my nose as I crack the egg open into a wine glass. It really helps sell the trick and afterwards it places me into a great situation to use a comedy line like, " oh this..(points to sticker on nose).. this is just my Rudolph starter kit." The kids and adults fine it funny and it is a nice way to finish a wonderful effect.
I simply love silk to egg and I am glad I finally placed it into my show about a year ago. The rubber cement I have found works the best so far out of everything I have tried. Because I am outside so often, I had to find something that worked in heat and humidity and rubber cement has been the answer for me at least. Kyle

I get real good results with a very broad presentation and a kicker:
"You have to show them this side [of the fake egg] and not this side [hole] or they'll say MISTER, THERE'S A SPOT ON YOUR EGG, and you have to be honest and admit that it's inside the egg. [Withdrawing a little corner to show that the silk is there, then pocketing fake egg] But we magicians like to have what we call an 'out' - [taking out real egg] if they see this side and say MISTER, THERE'S A SPOT ON YOUR EGG, what you do is peel it off like this ... [stick spot onto your black shirt or coat, right at the buttonhole where you've hidden a duplicate hanky, one corner darkened to camouflage it ... no one ever notices] [Do the break-the-egg bit] and then they'll say MISTER, THERE'S A SPOT ON YOUR SHIRT, and you say no, it's not a spot, it's [pulling out the hanky] the handkerchief!" |

Rubber cement...man, why didn't I think of that!
I had given up on this effect for the same reasons and totally missed the obvious solution. Rossmacrae, I like your ending! I may have to give it a try (if that's ok with you). |

What silk to egg method do you guys use? As for the adhesive I would highly recommend something called Glue Dots. You should be able to find it on http://www.google.com. I bought some for Jim Pace's Web Effect at Michael's (Craft Shop) & they work really well.

Great Idea Ross. By the way do any of you have problems with the Ammar ending of pulling the silk back out of the dot? I've found this part a bit difficult. If anyone has any ideas on this part I'd sure be interested to hear about it.

I just find pulling the silk bacvk out of the red dot to be counter-productive for me. The peeling the sticker off and the breaking of the egg is such a tremendous magical moment for me, that I would hate to ruin that intense reaction by following it up with the silk from dot. That is only my opinion though.

I have been performing this trick in my kid shows for about 7 years. I initially put this in for the parents that were watching, but the kids love it as much as the adults. I started to use the last bit of pulling the silk out of the sticker, but I felt that the overall effect was weakened, judged by the reactions that I was getting.

I too use the rubber cement to stick the dots on. Before I started using the sticker, I would use a red magic marker to draw the circle. Outline the circle using a coin and then fill in the middle with a marker.
It really is a great effect for all ages. Tom

The peeling the dot off and cracking the egg into a glass is such a strong moment in the effect. I also love the dot rather then using a marker. It comes off much easier and the act of peeling creates that moment of suspense and wonderment that I love.

Kyle, thanks for the tip of using rubber cement.
I also love doing silk to egg. I perform 'Super Chicken' and the spectators love it. If you haven't gotten super chicken then you are missing a great silk to egg routine! Ray |

Ray,
Thanks. I may have to look into super chicken a bit more. It might be another great way to do silk in egg. PS: I am making alterations to your logo in the next day or two and should have those to you shortly. =) Kyle
