I am planning to perform for a group of magicians in about 10 weeks. I have come up with an appearence and disappearence using Bl*** A**. I recently won a contest online with a costume I built for Halloween. You can see it HERE
The contest I won was from the company I bought my neon wire from. As 1st place winner, I got 238 feet of various colors that I chose from these COLORS My question is... Do you think the wire would be useful for enhancing my appearence/disappearence on my BL*** A** stage? I plan to make a sign and make designs with the wire. I would have posted this under the BL*** A** section but few people visit and contribute to "The Deceptive Side of Magic" forum and I need some responses. I don't want to use audience blinding "headlights" to enhance my BA stage. Any suggestions for use of the wire would be great as well. |

The out fit rock. I think you can definatly pull something amazing off with it. You can put the rope lights around a door frame or something. Wow lots of potential ideas.
When you say a bl*** A** stage....like what is going to be on the stage....just something blank with some signes hanging from the batons??? Like to know if you are having tables or chairs or so forth on the stage...Cause what you can do to interwin the props to geather is out-line them with the wires. Cause it will enhance the props and bring the theme togeather. But again nice costumes Michael

You do NOT need to "blind" your audience with headlights in order for BA to be effective.
Contact Don Drake at: http://www.blackartsecrets.com - he has some great reading material that you should find useful and a new book out about lighting and BA presentations. -JH
Did you see that?

You can use the lights facing the audience at a low intensity. Copperfield does that for some of his illusions.

I have almost everything Don Drake offers. Video, lecture notes, books. I have been working with BA for awhile and I realize the difference between success and failure with BA is the lighting. I will have my 238 feet of wire here on Wednesday so I will know soon enough if it works or not. If anything, I plan to use some of the wire for a sign for my name. I was thinking about other designs that would break up the outer levels of my BA where I don't really need it for any illusion. I have a BA wall for my backdrop and I don't want it all black. I would like to use this glow wire to enhance my set and was curious if anyone had any ideas. I don't plan to wear the costume...although it's very kewl to wear, I feel it would be too distracting to perform magic in. BTW, the pictures don't do this costume justice. I had many other light up items (blinkies/leds/chasing rope lights) that the pic doesn't show. I animated the wire to enhance it for the contest at the website. I also had a voice changer so I could interact with people in it.
Michael, I plan to have a table and chair on the stage. My opening entrance is going to be appearing from a remote control car that is driven up onto a table via a ramp. The table is 18 inches off the ground and is as basic (and thin) as a table can get. You can see under the table and behind the table. It's in the middle of the stage. On the table is a box that is just large enough for the remote car which is a 1/6th scale Hummer. I will emerge from the top of this box which is too small to hold my body. I plan to disappear at the end of my act by standing on a chair and raising a cloth in my hands over my head. The cloth will drop to the floor revealing nothing but the chair and my cloth laying flat. Just like in Copperfields Building Implosion, The Hummer will emerge from this cloth as it slowly rises from a completely flat position and then drives off (to a standing ovation!) |

Wow that is sweet. You can outline the table with the wires. That would be cool and when you appear the sign can either be flown in or turned on with your name on it.
Since you will have a hummer go up a ramp thing. What would be cool is a stop sign on the end with out the ramp at an angle that is colored with the wires. That could be fun and have some type of scenery and meaning for the show. Michael

Not a globe, it's a space helmet, plexi. There were many lights on the helmet but the pic does not show them. Once again, I do not plan to wear this costume in the show, it's just the only example I have of the wire. It's fairly bright and can be powered by 2 AA batteries so it's totally portable. It can be set to either strobe (as shown in the robot pics) or set always on. I don't plan for the wire to strobe, again, I feel it's a distraction thing. I like the stop sign idea. I will toy with outlining my table and chair with the wire. Neither the table or chair is gimmicked in any way...I don't want them to appear as though they are so I'm not sure. I do want to break up my BA wall with some of it. Maybe outline my wall. The wire arrives tomorrow!

Sweet. I would love to see pics of your set. This sounds like a lot of fun. When you brought up the wires. It reminded me of a scene that I saw from Miss Sigon. If you have not seen that show you should. There is a part where like 30 HUGE signs fly down lit up like las vegas (well they where in las vegas per say in the show). And it was cool as anything.

How cool of you to mention Miss Saigon. I work for that show That scene in Bangkok with all the light-up signs is really a lot of fun.
Musicman your costumes are pretty cool. I am sure the neon wire will make a great enhancement to your sets. One of the keys for black art is to make sure as MUCH of the stage as possible is lit, thus minimizing the use of the dark areas. Use them just where you need to. I did an appearance off a table once using this method and it worked like a charm. In fact a video of it can be seen on my website. --Jack |

I saw your Appearance Video on your website Jack, VERY KEWL! I like your music selection for that illusion as well. I think I heard that song on the Spiderman DVD credits. I know what you mean by lighting up the stage. I actually have a BA wall and I need very little of it to pull off my illusions. This leaves the outer edges of my wall and some fairly large sections open for using this glow wire. The wire arrives today, I should have some video for reviews by the end of the weekend. I'll post the links here for anyone that is interested...
