Well I have to say that I got a preview of Cap Casino's teaching video and it's just incredible!

You want something to set you apart from others, just do one of the cuts included in the video and you leave a huge impression!

Preview's and a free learn video and the download which is 20 bucks dvd for 30 is ready for all to grab!

20 bucks for this is a steal. and Cap goes into great detail and teaches the cut dynamically!

I truly hope you get this video as it will add spice and style to any Carman or magicians act!

So go to expertmagic.com and get your copy! Smile

Excellent, yes, find a place for them in the world of magic?

What's the point in that porcupine cut, or the super sible cut?

I suppose you could use some of them as gag items, seems a lot of work to put in to just go "check out what I can do".

When I first met Cap, (a couple of years ago) he was relatively new to magic. He was learning items from Card College I believe. It seems as if he has abandoned magic for the genre of the multipacket cuts.

Although I wasn't there, I heard from a couple of people that he entered a close up show at the SAM in NY and bombed horribly. That's a shame and surprising, because he was doing some restaurant magic for awhile.

I guess there is an audience for this style of performing, but I think the numbers are limited.

I just think it's totally pointless Smile the best thing I could come up with for that Super Sybil all day was:

Walk up to a magician, do it, and say,
"Pick a card any card".

His manipulation isn't bad, but I think there is a fine line where multi packet cuts move away from being magic, or even magical.

I must say that there is a place for everyone in the world of magic. However whether something LOOKS magical or not is another quesion. Magic is an ART form so it can have many different genres. I applaud those who do the cuts, those who do card manips., those who perform gambling demos, etc. They are all doing what they love to do and if they love it and it makes them happy. CONGRATS to them.

I think it would definitely be difficult to eek out a performance if your entire act was doing the sybil cuts. Most people would be impressed and 30 seconds later they would probably think "OK. OK. I get it."

PS - My post is not meant to insult Cap Casino. When I met him he was a very nice kid. As I said, I am sure there is an audience for this style (albeit a limited audience) and he does a very nice job.

Hey guys,
I met Capaso about 2 years ago. He is a good friend of mine through magic. Some of you may be saying 'yeah, yeah, yeah, but he only does flourishes...' that is not true at all. He does tons of magic, I have seen him and sessioned with him many times, he is very good with sleight of hand, magic, presentation, and flourishes. He is no slouch. He is very good so you should definitely check out his video. I was very surprised by how well it was done.
Buy it at his website
http://www.capcasino.com
or more details at
http://www.expertmagic.com

Euan asked what the point was in doing something like the porcupine or the Cap Cut/Super Sybil. Euan, this creates a challenge in flourishes, they are very pretty flourishes, and their point is to create an astonishing flourish. Maybe you might not like them, if you are afraid to try them but you should try and perform them for an audience and you will be pleased with the reaction and applause you will get. The main point to realize and understand is that flourishes ARE NOT magic, they are purely an art form. I love flourishes and do tons of them, but they are not magic, simply a whole different art form that uses cards... and you can combine the two (magic and flourishes) to create a VERY strong moment..

Trust me, I have seen it done and I have done it myself. If you want just a little bit of proof, watch Troy Hoosers excellent DVD's 'Total Destruction' to see how a few flourishes are incorporated into a card magic routine properly. I do many more flourishes in my routines than Troy does, but they need to be put in the proper places, Troy is a great example as he is very good with cards.

Cap is good, his video is good, and he is a nice guy. Same with the Buck brothers, they are very good, and their notes and video are also good (For those wondering, the Bucks also do magic and sleight of hand and do tons of reading, and so does Cap and many others)

Two other flourishers to watch for, who are friends of Cap and mine, are Kelvin Kwong and Dustin Crispo, they are making a flourish video as well, it is called 'Paper Cuts'.

Caps video is called 'Cap Cuts-the dynamic display cuts of Cap Casino' and that's what his cuts are... dynamic display cuts. Kelvin and Dustin have cuts which really aren't display, just VERY cool looking. Also, look for Lee Asher, Joey Burton, Ashford Kneitel, etc.

If you are getting started in flourishes, I recommend the stuff by the Buck brothers, Cap, and Lee Asher, but for something even larger and better, check out Jerry Cestkowski's Encyclopedia of Card Flourishes.
Mr. Cestkowski is one of the best, and his GREAT book, encycolopedia of card flourishes will run you through tons of things.
Get it at: flourishman

If you want to see something even better yet, then you HAVE to see clips of a true master, his name is De'vo. De'vo is part of the Ulmen 4 and Superhandz team, and he is the best flourisher I have ever seen. While he does not show all of his real work on his website, and I have not seen anything that is not on the website, there are some clips on the website which he may consider basic, but to us they are way beyond anything we could have imagined. Very innovative sleights and clips can be found at the excellent website: superhandz

The flourishes there are INCREDIBLE! you will not believe what you see him do on the website. it is very cool so check it out!

Enjoy!

Sincerely,
Doug Pace-the magic sponge

Well I have to say, that you guys are judging cap just on his video, it's not all he does and is not meant to be a whole routine, just with cuts, he's giving you tools to mix in your normal routine.
Well that's my 2 cents

I for one think that he is a great guy with great ability in his fingers, I mean, wow! He's out there with some great stuff, everyone has their own special abilites in certain areas. If he loves doing flourishes and can do them well, then go for it I say. I just want to give my 2 cents worth...

I only looked at the sample teaching the BRS cut. I learned it in around 10 minutes, but of course speeding it up will take time and I already have very flexible hands from practicing other cuts and flourishes. That said, I still have a few retarded muscles in my hand that drop the 4th packet every so often.

Check the clip out yourself to judge.

Hi guys,

Not everybody can do flourishes.

Yes, Cap is a skilled guy and he can do much more than flourishes. He is young as well and works hard.

Some of us have ambition in magic and try our hardest to accomplish things. I can admit that I am one of those people, I work very hard to do something, I practice as much as I can, during school, and at home, however, I don't claim to be great or anything, I only will say that I have a love for magic and flourishes. Cap is a friend of mine, he practices a lot and works very hard, he is a nice guy as well.

Flourishes are not magic, they are a whole other art form, but you can flourish while performing magic, or perform magic while doing flourishes to ENHANCE the moment and reaction.

I will honestly say that I am surprised by how nice and graceful all the flourishers I have met are. Capaso is a very good friend of mine, he has only and always been nice to me, De'vo is a nice guy, the Bucks are very nice to me, so why do you go out and say bad things about them that aren't true?

Anyway, I am starting to ramble on. I respect the legends such as Marlo, Vernon, Jennings, Skinner, LePaul, etc (in fact they are my favorites) and I also respect newer guys such as Aaron Fisher (although he is an old timey magician, he still has some INCREDIBLE skill) Lee Asher, the Bucks, De'vo, Cap, etc. I don't know if it would hurt anyone to view magic and flourishes and other art forms in a way which respects them, even if they don't like them.

I hope you can make some sense out of this,
hope to hear your ideas, I apologize for writing so much, I just love to talk about magic and flourishes and sleights of hand.

Sincerely,
Doug- The Magic Sponge

I admire Cap Casino's dexterity - his skill is impressive.

I just sometimes tend to look down on flourishes, because they require no social skills and entertaining character - you can be a total antisocial idiot with an attitude who just happens to posses great digital dexterity, and such people are not able to do magic (I'm not saying this applies to Cap Casino or anyone in particular).

I just don't like seeing guys who can do 8 packet cuts, and can't execute a decent overhand shuffle. That is a common thing among young kids starting in card magic, and this is a fact that makes me sad and disappointed.

Has anyone read Mark Setteducati's book The Magic Show? If you have, this post should give you a chuckle...

I remember when people used to make fun of break dancers and pop lockers. They said it wasn't dancing. Just twitching around on the floor takes no skill at all, But now you see lots of dance styles have been influenced by the young urban punks who were spinning on their heads and twitching on the floor.

Some people like tap dancing, some people like ballroom dancing and others just like to jump around and bash into people. They are all forms of dance....but it's all dancing and everyone has fun.

I think we are all here for the fun.

This art will not evolve unless we take some risks.

Much respect to the risk takers out there.

I wish that I could do those fantastic cuts. I would use them every chance I could. I'm not that gifted.
