Hi all,
I live in The Netherlands and we are stuck to the euro, so my question is: Can someone can tell me where I can get half dollars? I can buy them here in the magic shop, but they cost a fortune. Sugestions anyone?

Try a google search, I am sure that many USA shops will mail them to you. Paula

Even in the States you can find them only in the casinos. You should try at the coin shop or coin colletor.

You should definately look for ebay. You can get complete rolls of half dollars for about $10 and up on that site.

Look on Ebay. I got a full brand new roll of Kennedy halves for 13$. Finally, my hands will stop crying from euro coins being too small.

Definitely eBay. You'll also be able to get good deals on old solid silver Walking Liberty halves as well. These are much more attractive and interesting than the newer half dollars.
I have six locks on my door all in a row. When I go out, I only lock every other one. I figure no matter how long somebody stands there picking the locks, they are always locking three. Elayne Boosler

I've found that just going to coin shops and asking for there circulated halves, that they'll pull out a bag of halves that are all very useable. I understand that you are in a different country than the US, but I do believe that our currency is pretty popular, numismatically considering the actual silver value inside of it.

In the U.S.A., I have no trouble going to a bank and buying half dollars by the roll. If I were in the Netherlands, I would visit a couple of money changers (they used to have booths in the shopping areas years ago) and ask them for halves. I am sure some Americans have a half dollar in their pocket and as they spend all of their other money, the half dollars will be turned into Dutch Guilders from time to time. I don't think these people will have lots of them, but it is worth a try. You might also try a bank where you have an account and see if they can find some for you. These would not be at a premium.
I found it strange that when I visted a US bank and asked for silver dollars, not only did they not have them, but the tellers, who in most cases were young men and women, had never heard of, or even seen a silver dollar. Fifty years ago (I do go back awhile) we used to gamble at Los Vegas and the colored one dollar chips did not exist because every casino used silver dollars. No longer! |

Try "Ebay Germany" and "Ebay UK". The postage is cheaper then sending the coins from the USA, and you don´t pay customs because you live in the EU.

You can try magicwarehouse.com, but they are expensive. Ebay has the best deals, even if you want coins besides just Kennedy halves.

Metius -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At least the euro is better than the Chineese coins they sell in Holland. These have a size between the half and a euro. So until now, I was stuck with the euro. But, on the other hand, it is nice to have trained with the euro, because everybody has them in their pocket.

Hi
Also look at UK coins - the old Half Crown is a similar size and the UK £5 coin is very nice to work with. Paula

You should be able to find them almost any where on the net. I always get mine at the banks here in the states though. I would also check coin collector shops. You might be able to get decent prices from them, that's where I get my irish pennies.

The UK £5 coin is that used as a current coin? or is it like the half dollar only available at banks or collectors? I'm in london every week and I have never seen a £5 coin.

In fact, most cash registers here usually don't even have a compartment for them; they usually seem to be kept under the money tray. But they can usually be gotten from most larger banks. Half dollars haven't been minted in nearly pure silver here since 1964 so those are quite rare, but eBay is a great source for them. Silver dollars are not seen in circulation ever now (at least by me). They've been replaced by the silver-colored Susan B. Anthony dollar coin and the Sacagewea gold-colored dollar coin. But even those are rarely seen in circulation. Either people are hoarding them, or find them undesirable to carry and use for some reason. Like a previous poster mentioned, I can remember, back in the 1970s, when Las Vegas was awash in silver dollars; it seemed like all the dollar coins in America might have been there. -Dan |

I lived in England for a few years and I never saw one (5 pound coin). I like the .50p coins (different shape than normal) and the 2 pound coins are a decent size as well.
This was taken from http://www.24carat.co.uk/britishcoinsframe.html Other Rare Sightings There is a Five Pound (£5) coin, known as a crown, which has been issued since 1990, but they are rarely seen in circulation. The crown originally had a face value of five shillings, and since decimalisation, twenty five (25) pence. Pre 1990 crowns are only seen very rarely in circulation. I've always just gone to the bank, and they seem to have tons of them...unless you are looking for mint, or specific types....1964's, etc.
