I thought at least the title would draw some interest!
I have had my 2 doves for about a week now, and through observing them, I came to the conclusion that I had a male and a female. My reasoning for this is that the male always bowed while it was cooing, and the female just basically had her head down while she was cooing. However, today my "female" bird started to bow and coo at the same time as well. Is it possible I have 2 males?? Or will the female birds occasionally do this as well? |

Usually the male bird is bigger then the female and I'm not sure about the cooing but I hope that helps.

Female birds will occasionally do what you've described. It's not a 100%, fool-proof method. Sexing birds is always a tricky thing. I'm told by those who keep Parrots that the only sure-fire test is genetic, and it costs quite a bit of money.
With doves, if you have a pair, you might get lucky and actually figure out which one is laying the eggs. When you do, use a footband to mark her. |

Well I am hoping that I am correct and that I have one of each. I am going to go out this week and pick up some nesting material and a nesting cup and see what happens.
Guess I will just have to keep my fingers crossed till then. |

Actually genetic testing is quite cheap for birds. All you need is $20 and one drop of blood (usually from a toenail). Contact Zoogen and they'll send you a free collection kit for the sample. Being a parrot guy, I'm not absolutely sure they sex doves, but I'm pretty sure they do.

That is a great idea as well. I will contact Zoogen. Thanks for the tip!

Hello there.
I took both of my birds to a bird specalist because one of them is a little sick and while I was there I asked about sexing doves. They told me to check the vent plates. The vent plates are between the base of the breast bone and anus. When you feel for this you will feel two bumps, if they are real close together almost to the point of touching that is your male, if there is some space between the vent plates and you could at least put your index finger between them then that's your female. Hope this helps! Best, Jeff

I wish you luck with that method. It appears to be something that works well in textbooks but not too well on the farm. After thirty years of using that method, I'm right about half the time! It is probably a better indication of age than sex. But the darkness of the feet is even a better indication of age. You can't go to the bank with it as a test for doves. I still do that sometimes but then I wait to see if I get four eggs, two eggs or no eggs. As I said, it works half the time but so does flipping a quarter. It does give you something to do while you wait!
