Hi guys, I've been into magic for a couple of years now, and I have been performing behing the bar at the restaurant I work at for the past year or so. I've just been doing it casually, with a set of 3-4 effects that I do when I feel like entertaining the crowd at the wood (bar stool area) or tables around it. I guess one lady was real impressed with a red hot mama / chicago opener effect I did followed by Simon Lovell's "Sleight of Tongue". Anyways, she hired me for a private b-day party at a ritzy pad with all women (25-35) years old. I'll be the only guy at the party!
So... I need help on what to perform, and in what order, i.e. opener/middle/closer. I'm not going to learn anything new because it's going to be next week, and I'm just polishing up the first effects off J.J. Sanverts DVD vol.2 (Colour Fusion and Cannibal Cards) Most of my material is card work; this is what I can comfortably perform: -2 Card Monte with Watch Steal(Brazil) / Watch Transfer (Mossiere) variation, if opportunity exists (my own handling) -Ambitious Card (D.Brown handling) and/or with Paperclipped Ending (Sankey) -Card to Pocket (don't know, Sankey showed me how) -Smoke (D.Brown) with Cassandra Deck handling ins/of MindPowerDeck -Sleight of Tongue, The Namer, Your Number's Up, Heartless (Lovell) -Think, Touch, Turn (Malone + Pearlman variations) -Red Hot Mama / Mamacita -Three Card Monte (Catch 33,Asher) -Emerge Triumphant (Oz Pearlman) -Finger Flicker, High Noon, Colour Sense, Master of the Mess (Hartling) -Variations of any pick card/force, control, find, flashy reveal method Gaff Decks: -Invisible -Cassandra (Hilford) -Mental Photography -A New World (Dill/Weber) Note: just got it, AWESOME...thinking about tying it in with Pit Hartling's Colour Sense to start... Others (Mentalism/PK): -Mind Control (Bill Abbott) -Thought Transmitter -Super Sharpie -M5/Raven effects -Loops (Mesika), thus Haunted Deck as well -Fork Bending Routine (Morgan Strebler handling)...a crowd pleaser at the bar, don't think I'm gonna do this at the party though -Autome, Kurotsuke, The Mockingbird (Maven) (Coins) -Mr. Clean Coins Across (Sankey) -Extroydinary, 3-fly one/two, Coins to Glass (Hooser) Phew, now that's what I know I can perform...But I don't know what effects to use and how to routine it to get the maximum impact from 13-17 drunken ladies. I know I could probably perform a 21 card effect with my shirt off and that would get a scream (or snicker, chuckle, and a lot of pointing), but I want to create a real, solid routine that would take up a good hour or so. Oh yes, and one more thing...we haven't settled on payment... How much should I charge base on the effects I might certainly provide, but taking my inexperience into consideration? |

I would say you have lots of stuff, for a good hour no worries about that. As for the which effects goes first and which goes next, and the amount of money you should charge , I am sorry I cant help, because I need some help on that as well hehehe

One good rule of thumb that I've found helpful is to ask how much the person has budgeted for entertainment. Sometimes they'll give you a figure far higher than you would have been comfortable asking for. If they have no idea and just want to leave it up to you, don't be afraid to ask for a fair price: if you lowball your show, it can sometimes give the impression that you aren't really that professional. As to what a fair price is, you need to have a sense of what the market will bear: fifty bucks for a birthday party would probably be the absolute low end, while charging between a hundred and two hundred would be about what a pro would charge. Of course, this can vary based on location, but since I don't know where you live, I can't offer any advice on that. |

You certainly have lots of effects at your disposal, but you are jumping the gun. You haven't addressed your mind to several key elements:
1. How many people will be attending the party? 2. What type of performance setting will you be faced with? Are you strolling and mingling with the crowd as you perform? Will you be performing in a more structured parlour setting? Will you be going from table to table during dinner? Adults have many different types of birthday parties and the type of routine you develop will depend on the performing environment. Don't assume - ask. 3. Are you going to be expected to do only one show, or are you expected to repeat a number of sets throughout the evening? This will affect the types of effects you include since your ability to re-set may be limited (I'm sure the host will get a little worried if she sees you running to the bathroom every 10 minutes). 4. Will you have any table space to perform? This becomes extremely important if you are strolling. Food and drink may be everywhere, but where can you place your cards? 5. What are your angles going to be? Will you be totally surrounded or will you be able to control your back and side angles? This will affect the tricks that you may be able to safely perform. These are just a few of the issues that came to mind. I'm sure there may be many more. But you need to answer these types of questions before you can effectively decide which tricks to put into your show. If in doubt, assume the worst possible performing environment and choose your tricks accordingly. Kent

A party only with ladys.... I did it once (with 8 ladys between 26 and 30 years old), and I can tell you one thing: you can have a lot of fun, but don´t be too technical. Ladys like effects, but they don´t care a lot about you technical abilities (that way my experience).

Thank you very much for your replies guys. Kent, you're absolutely right...I've assessed how many ladies will be attending (max.20, approx 15-17), but I haven't addressed any of the variables you have outlined, i.e, table space, angles, and exactly what type of show I will be doing (one singular parlour show vs. strolling/mingling). I am hopefully prepared to be able to accomodate whatever function they want for me, but to be sure, I'm calling the host right now to confirm!
Phaedrus thank you, I told her we would negotiate the price soon, and I probably was going to lowball myself (75...Canadian!) so I think I'll aim a little higher. Can't hurt, right? These ladies are loaded... |
