You are most welcome Cliff. I hope these links help you a bit in finding what you are looking for. If you need any advice on the chair suspsneison or tips on how to present it or safety tips, just feel free to PM me. I would be happy to help you out.

Well if you did a chair suspension, it WOULD be the eding for your show and end in a big way. Yes, it does cost some money but consider it as an investment. Usually 2-3 paid b-day shows pays the illusion off. I find that very well worth the money.

Perhaps if you want an effect that is second to the end, that if you tell us your routine order for the show you are doing now, this will help us get a better idea of what you are doing in the show and what may be lacking that you could add in. Fill us in on your show line up now and we can help you better.

Kyle

The show order is as such:

-Intro to music (Zero To Hero) I produce a small silk streamer and then get a volunteer and using some nesting wands and a change bag, I turn the streemer into a 30 foot one.
-I give my little talk and then go into Professor's Nightmare.
-Vanishing Bandana
-Dream Bag routine (One of the things I have inside is a hankerchief)
-Five Minutes With a Pocket HAnkerchief
-NOTHING (This is where I need the audience participation with the borthday kid)
-Ending, whith a musical routine using silks and sponges and a Silk Fountain to "I Just Can't Wait To Be King"

The flow is great, but I cant seem to find that second to last effect. For older kids I thought about the balloon bag routine from Jeff Hobson's video, but I can't blow up the balloons and I want to involve the spectator a bit more.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

I'm doing a birthday in a few weeks and will have the birthday boy help me by
doing a paper tear and turning it into a proper wizard hat. Then I will pull out
4 Linking rings and do a similiar routine of Whit Haydn. I'll end with giving the BB a "Lord of the Rings" journal book for helping me out and because its his birthday.

BTW, I found a surplus of these books at the Dollar store in my area.

Good Luck,

Hi SwissKid,

You've mentioned you want something inexpensive so here's a few things that may possibly work in your show to involve the b-day child.

Egg bag - Child is the one that says the magic words and perhaps waves a wand over it. You can think about having the mom/dad sit down while you tip the bag over. Wow! Their child was the one that made it dissapear! Whew! it worked. You can play this up in a series of ways involving the child.

David Ginn has an effect out on the market Top Hat/ Change bag, which includes a stuffed rabbit. You can use patter that you yourself have been unable to produce a rabbit from a hat but you've noticed the b-day child appears to be special and can possibly do it. What you do for your patter fits your persona, I pretend I'm reading the instructions from a magic book to the child. Child is wearing the top hat and I've purchased a really nice coat and tails tux (white) suitable for girls or boys that the child wears to assist with this effect. You can pick anything similar up at any second hand store but just have it drycleaned for a few dollars. They remove the hat and wave the wand over it...using their own words. You hold the hat high so they can't see into it and...(you'll have to figure out this part) but when you lower the hat the child reaches in a produces the rabbit! The cost of this prop (hat is aprox 50 dollars) and outfit (depends where you purchase it).

The child is the star and you act as the assistant and it makes for good photos for the parents.

Every one of my shows is audience participation and it can be something as simple as asking the child for the magic words to make it happen or having kids shout out the words. A child can blow, touch , say words, wiggle fingers..anything to feel involved with the show. The props you use are only secondary in my opinion to make them feel involved.

Good luck to you!

Swiss,

In my mind I try to have my next to last trick build up the the finally. This means that usually my finally and my second to the last effect are both strong effects that get great reactions. Now notice I have said that I want a great reaction trick and not a great wow them or stunner trick.

A great reaction effect can be one that is very comical or one that is very amazing. The choice is yours just as long as it is a strong effect that gets a good reaction fro the audience.

For some of my shows, I will do several different second to the end effects. Some of these are:
- Torn and restored newspaper - festivals and larger events
- Silk to Egg - done as a teach a trick
- My comedy measle bag routine using 2 kids from the audience and played up for a TON of laughs

Hope some of these help.

Since you already do rope magic, I think a great trick to do with the birthday child would be Mac King's Other Rope Trick. You probably will have no difficulty with the moves and it plays brilliantly.

It is described in another thread on the Café. Check I out here:

There is a good description of the effect there.
