I have been doing magic for over 40 years, so I have, of course, seen some great effects. So many, that I seldom rave about a trick, but I want to make an exception for the Eddie Gibson version of Coin Unique.
It uses an American half and quarter to produce the same effect as the old dime and penny, but, due to its magnetic content, it "locks" better and is quite innocent appearing. The great Harry Blackstone, Sr. is supposed to have called the dime and penny "the world's best coin trick." And who am I to question his judgement, but I can't help but wonder if he ever saw Coin Unique. Ed Hutchison |

Nice of Blackstone to compliment the creation of T. Nelson Downs.
His son may well have seen Eddie Gibson's coin set. How is it working for you? Getting good reactions?

I'm a mentalist and not really much of a coin man. I just like to have something in my pocket to fool 'em with (on short notice) and Coin Unique gets a great response.
Naturally, my pocket always contains a swami gimmick for when I want to not just trick 'em but confound 'em. There is a difference. Ed Hutchison |

I got my first one in the early 80s. It wasn't even called Coin Unique at the time. At the top of the instruction sheet it says "The Fantastic Magnetic Locking Coin". Written in pencil it also says "Eddie Gibson Magnetic Half $35.00". Other than that note there is no other indication of the maker.
A magician friend saw me using it in the early/mid 90s, and was very determined to own one. At the time they were not readily available, so he wrote to Eddie Gibson to request that he make two more sets, one for each of us. As I recall those custom made sets cost us nearly $100 each. The Coin Unique is a versatile gimmick that provides a very clean method for some startling vanishes, penetrations, and transpositions. Build a routine with an entertaining story line, mix in a little skillful manipulation, and this well made device can turn many good tricks into near miracles. Greg |
