I'd like to ignite flash paper in a dove pan, but without resorting to matches, cigarette lighters etc. Touching it with a wand would be fine but I'd prefer no visible flames. Are there such methods?
Thanks all! |

Check out the Igniter by Jim Pace, it is basically silent electronic ignition that vanishes.
You would have to touch it with your hand, but then it could be immidiatly shown empty afterwards. However, if you are going to do it in a dove pan, just have something burning in the dove pan(like those sticks that they give out to light fireworks, they burn with barely any smoke and will stay hot for a good long time) and just touch the flash paper to it. |

Thanks for the suggestions, but neither hits the mark.
1.It's towards the end of the show so I can't have something already burning in the pan (which has to be shown empty anyway) 2. I can't afford a Jim Pace Igniter! 3. I'm not sure about a bang wand...it's for little kids. I know I'm fussy, but anything else? Thank you!! |

Try those little playing card sized gimmiks with the hot coil
might leave it in the bottom of the metal pan and touch paper to it |

MagicSmith Pyromaniac or a House of Fire gimmick called Wanna Flash would work. You can mount either unit in tje secret load chamber of the dove pan, press it to get fire, and show your hands empty. Pyromaniac lights flash paper and wanna flash lights just the cotton. It depends on the type of flash you want.

You can have a small lighter (electronic type) already in the dish area of the dove-pan... then palm it out while showing the pan empty and light your flashpaper. As soon as the object is produced and you are removing it, just drop the lighter back into the dish area.

Look for Jim Pace's Flaming Comic Book , you could remove the gimmick and lay it flat at the bottom of the dove tray, (drop it in however you'd like) and use the wand to press the "trigger" (no click or anything like that involved), and boom.
This effect is very inexpensive compared to the igniter. Or, modify your dove pan by cutting a small hole just offsides from the bottom and stick a lighter up in there

Please be careful, try buying a product available. Don't try making one. If you can't afford it don't do it. This is to risky and not to metion unethical. For everyones sake don't experiment with fire.

Nick - thanks, mum. I'll make sure there's a grown-up helping me. (And how is experimenting with different ways of igniting flash paper unethical, exactly?) Tsk.
Thanks foe the tips on the BBQ sparker: I'd guessed that it might not work but it's nice to have it confirmed. I've now done a search for Wanna Flash: it ain't gonna help me, but a thing called The Pen (Magic Warehouse) is, I think, what I need. It ignites flash paper with a touch, no flame. I suspect it might house one of those "flameless" gas lighters - anybody care to enlighten (ha!) me? |

Hmmm.... I'm dreaming up ways I could make my own "the pen".
I'm not sure how they make theirs', but if you take a $2 penlight, remove the bulb and solder a little loop of nichrome wire there instead, just slightly extending beyond the tip of the pen .. of course, it wouldn't look like a normal pen, ..or would it ?

They might just heat the end of the pen up a ton...
"not to metion unethical" Again, how is playing around with igition sources unethical? I still say go low tech with the firework things... They are like incense with no smoke or smell, they are brown and come free with most fireworks.... they stay lit and hot for a long time... can leave inside dovepan and with a touch will set it off. |

Go to a joke shop and buy those little fireworks that explode when you throw them. They look like miniature garlic. I used to palm and throw them hard in my duck pan which had a little lighter fluid on it. It looked like I lighted the pan magically.

Daegs-
Making up the pen isn't unethical... If you make them and sell them, then it becomes unethical. Bruce |

At this point, I'm not entirely convinced that walsall knows what ethical means.
He might have meant, "practical". Whatever. I like the idea that Lou Hilario came up with, that's brilliant ! Some of them are always going to be duds, it seems like about 1 in 5, but if you throw two of them at a time, you should be covered.

Why is making up a pen that has the end heat up unethical?
Last time I checked, no one "invented" making a common device heat up.... Just like it wouldn't be unethical to make up your own Svengali decks or flash paper(if you knew the process), it isn't unethical to make and sell a heating up pen if you really wanted to. |

Ross,
I found a link which may be of interest to you. In fact, the whole website, probably. This product is called "Touch It", and does what you want - you just touch the flash paper, and off it goes. http://www.ahouseoffire.com/p16.html In fact, that's all this company does, make fire effects - 8 pages of them, including the pen. It's run by Rick and Rachelle Haslett, and all the effects are electronic , using only flash paper or cotton. No flint wheels or flints, ever, and not even lighter fluid as far as I can tell. http://www.ahouseoffire.com
