Hi,
I've notice that everyone talks about sculptures with balloons and practically no magic. I'm actually new with balloons and I was wondering if magic with balloons is a good idea at all or maybe I should focus on sculptures only. I'd appreciate some advice. Greatings to you all

I've herd of Balloon routines, but I don't know much about it. Some tricks I have herd of are cut and restored balloon, and Jeff Hobson's Balloon Bag.
You know you are a magician when you have boxes full of lecture notes you have never read, but still are excited about going out and buying more.

I started out just making the Balloon Animals for kids. I now use some of the balloons in my magic routine. I make a `dog' and talk about how he is always hungry. To show he is not `so hungry' I `twist it's ears to release a token...for the child. I also construct a `sausage dog' who got stuck in a tube (long balloon put thru gimick tube and twist the dog while in the tube-ends). Then I tell everyone the dogs okay because he is thinner than he looks. I then put the long needle through the tube and the dog doesn't pop (old old trick). I also make a chicken head (latex medical gloves) that produces a card prediction. If ya just let you mind go, the illusions are endless.
The Doctor will see you now! ;-)

I saw Bob Boley's video and he actually uses the balloon to create a ventriloquism puppet.
Very interesting. If you are into Ventriloquism, this is an idea. |

Hi,
One of the Tarbell volumes contains a routine with Linking Balloons. I can't remember which volume it was in at the moment - but perhaps some other members can help. Good Luck to you! Chrystal |

Do a balloon ANYTHING and you can put away the Magic for that gig. If I were you I'd pick one or the other: Ballooning or Magic. Combinations of the two can sometimes reduce your performance value. (JUST MY OPINION...with a few years of experience behind me).

There's always the trick where you swallow the balloon like sword swallowing. Not one that I'd recommend for kids shows though!!

Hobson's Balloon Bag is a great routine (get his video)
http://www.stevensmagic.com/shopping/shopexd.asp?id=5236 There's the old Spike Thru Balloon (the orginal Robert Gurtler/Andre Kole version or the one from Owen's called Spikes for Skeptics http://www.owenmagic.com/Club___Stage/club___stage.html ) Needle thru Balloon. http://www.daytonamagic.com/General%20Magic/G21.htm Dan Birch's Laser thru Balloon . (see a video at this link : http://www.danbirch.com/video_gallery.htm ) Card in Balloon (various methods; Karrell Fox has a good, practical one in one of his book, I think it's called "Another Book" .) Silk in Balloon (a vanished silk visibly reappears inside an inflated [clear] balloon) Abbott's Super Duper Balloon (a levitating balloon effect ) Petrick's Balloon Bang Box http://www.pmmagic.com/1magic.html |

Kenton Knepper has an excelent coin in the ballon in his video "Klose-up & Unpublished"
A signed coin penetrates a ballon. The ballon is ripped to get the coin back and finally the ballon is restored. You'll love the effect and the method. Magic at his best and with a ballon. cheers |

You can do a card trick that goes wrong (my favourite scenario) and then pronounce that the balloon dog can do better card tricks. Let him sniff out which card the kid chose.
Use a change bag to put in an uninflated balloon. Pull out a poodle. This was one of my first tricks. |

Can I ask what a balloon bag is?
I have been including balloon animals for every child in my parties. Often I will have 25-30 children at a party - usually 3 parties a day on weekends, so I pre-make half the balloons that morning so I don't have to take up too much time at the party. This has become ridiculously time consuming, as many have popped by the time I get there! Once made and handed out the children take them apart, pop them, or cry that they want another colour! So it has been more trouble than it's worth for me.. seeing as balloons are such a small part of what I do. So, I have decided to scrap that part of the parties, however, the balloons are a skill that not every "fairy" has! Any ideas on incorporating a balloon trick (suitable for 3-6 yr olds) and would result in me giving a balloon to only the birthday girl - without upsetting the others? Or perhaps any routine that would result in just one balloon for the b'day child? (I can only make poodles, 1 balloon flowers and 2 balloon flowers) I thought about hats.. but the little girls already have tiaras on and in my experience don't want to wear a hat.. Thanks! Melanie |

It is important for the parents of the birthday child that you appear to do extra for the birthday child,
AND It is important in the eyes of all the children that they are all treated equally. Every entertainer has a different way of dealing with this, however I will share what I have been doing. I don't claim that this is the best solution, as I am always trying to improve. These are the points: Having the birthday child help with a magic trick that is a bit bigger playing than the other tricks. Letting the birthday child get his balloon animal/shape first. I don't make a giant one for the birthday child because other kids will throw a fit when they can't get the same cool spiderman. As far as a balloon routine goes: I recently found a magic routine that gets the child to select a certain hat shape out of a dozen choices, and then magically, that hat is found in a box that has been sitting there all along. This of course can be changed to different animals or any shapes, instead of hats. As far as the balloons popping before you leave: outdoor shows can be a disaster for that. Here's some brainstorming: Perhaps allowing yourself to pop a balloon "accidentally" will show the kids that they are poppable, and you make a big deal about how you need to be careful. Maybe you could talk about them being MAGIC BALLOONS but the magic forcefield disappears when they touch the ground. that's when they can easily pop. Having the extra balloons pre-made is good, but these can be given to the kids only if their other balloon pops. I work it a bit differently: I tell the kids that I am making ONE EACH, SO PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF IT. If they ask for one more for their mom or cousin, I might oblige if there's time. Careful with this because some will take advantage and get one for each of their school friends and their uncle. |

So is Mark Jenest's Bill-oon.
I don't think his presentation was worthy of a show so I made my own presentation for the effect. If you get Mark's Miracles While You Wait DVD from me, I include my presenetation for the effect... "signed bill-to-balloon" I do this at all kid's shows using a parent and it's awesome.

Marvin Hardy is perhaps the most knowledgable balloon person alive! Contact him, he has invented several magic tricks with balloons. He's written almost all the balloon tying books for Qualatex, he's the man you want to talk to. He sells several magic tricks involving all kinds of balloons! Good Luck!
