Some years ago I watch a fellow magician teaching the history behind the french drop. I did find it very interesting. He knew at least four different method of that sleight and they were all based on the same technique, but each one of them added some detail to make it seem more visual over the years. I wonder if there's a book somewere, where we can read about the evolution of some of the well known sleights and tricks we usually do, so we can learn more about the history of our own magic. Does anyone knows if something like that actually exists?

An excellent book on the evolution of some classic routines is Richard Kaufman's "Jennings '67", which goes through the evolution of some of Larry Jennings greatest tricks (e.g. for the "Invisible Aces" trick, Kaufman explains the 6 versions of the routine that Jennings came up with while the Invisible Aces plot evolved).
I have found that some of magic's better authors tend to provide excellent historical overviews (with credits). My favorites are Stephen Minch and Jon Racherbaumer (although some circles feel that he tends to emphasize the Chicago school's contributions above all others). Richard Kaufman, Simon Aronson, Stephen Hobbs, and Roberto Giobbi also deserve special mentions as authors, while Jamy Ian Swiss and Michael Close provide good insights in their roles as reviewers at Genii and MAGIC. I suspect that no single book exists that meets your criteria. However, if you are like me that's not such a bad thing ... it'll allow you to discover all of this information as you read and search through all of the wonderful books and DVDs on our craft !

Hi markhammagi,
Thank's for your post, I really apreciate it. Like you, I also like to discover some history of magic tricks on all the books I buy and I've found out that almost every good book I've read has a little explanation about how a particular trick has progress over the years. Although, as you said, I've never seen something similar to what I ment in my post. Your advices are very useful to me though, I'll try to seek out the titles and authors you've mentioned. Maybe it would be a good idea to make a book about that subject, I think it would be very interesting for us all and it would contribute to general culture about magic. Greatings my friend

I would go to Lybrary.com and the Learned Pig web site, and get hold of as many old books as possible. You will find so much there that you won't find anywhere else.
