Hi,
I read about the new tape "Flip's truly magical rope magic". I got the impression that Flips routine number one seems to be based on G. Sands routine, is it? The world is full of routines based on G. Sands work "Daryl's, Tabary's and David Williamson's". I appreciate your help in this matter. Yours faithfully :devilish: Dan Kirsch |

Hi, Dan -
I just received this DVD yesterday and have given it only a cursory review. Based on what I've seen, there's a mix of routines inspired by Sands and others; I can't speak to how much of the material may have been covered in Daryl's video set. I'll try to provide a more comprehensive review once I have a chance; however, I'm pleased with what I've seen so far. Take care - Mark |

I also have Flips magicial rope video, and I was very impressed with his ring and rope routine. In his routine Flip uses a large ring and each stage of his act builds. Highly recommended if you're into rope magic.

Am I mistaken, or isn't just a DVD release of Flip's two Rope Videos originally put out about ten years ago by Videonics?

Here is my brief review of this DVD -
I watched the performances through several times before watching the explanations, and it is apparent from the first routine that Flip is a creative and very technically accomplished magician who clearly enjoys performing. The routines are performed at a pace which allows the audience to keep track of what is going on, and none of the routines feature the Professors Nightmare which will appeal to anyone wanting to study material not framed by the this classic effect. Routine 1 is a two rope routine for which Flip uses a Chinese theme although it could easily be adapted to your own style. Highlights for me were the continuous loop phrase of the routine which developed a stage further to quickly become two intertwined loops, one of which was reduced to a small knot, and in another phase sliding the knot along the rope with a kicker ending when a spectator was asked to slide the knot himself but the knot will not move in any direction. Routine 2 is much shorter than the first and consists of a many knots effect - false, vanishing and reappearing. Overall this is an amusing and entertaining routine using a single piece of rope. The rope penetrations part consists of well known and not so well known penetrations through leg, wrist, thumb, and neck. This part is not a routine in itself but consists of individual tricks which could be incorporated into your own rope act. Routine 4 is a collection impersonations using a single piece of rope. These inpersonations include a German Girl, Cowboy, Mickey Mouse, Santa Clause and Chinese Magician. These were clever and would fit in better as a second rope set in a longer act. I don’t think the audience present quite knew what to make of them as there were not as many laughs as might have been expected. Routine 5 consists of some excellent routining of the classic ring and rope. Using two spectators this entertaining act builds and builds to a great climax. The explanations are clear but camera use is minimal with some zooming in now and again when necessary. No performers view shots or “super practice sessions”. Nevertheless, the explanations are easy enough to follow, and there are some funny quips from Flip now and again. One thing which I personally found funny was how he often refers to the ends of the ropes as the “extremities”. RC4MAG above has mentioned that this routine is a DVD release of two L and L videos of about ten years ago. I am not familiar with the original video release but I suspect this could be the case. During the performances there are no shots of the audience (although they are heard clapping and laughing) which feels a little strange as we have become so accustomed to seeing audiences getting into the spirit of things. In addition, the picture quality is a little blurry and this gives it a video rather than DVD feel. Overall: Lots of very strong material here. Recommended especially if you would like to find some entertaining alternative routines to those framed by the Professors Nightmare. Ray |

Yes, it is the Videonics video. many of L&L's offerings of late are, as they purchased the rights to the entire Videonics line. They also purchased the rights to the old Supreme books, which is why you see many of them being reissued. IMO, this is a good thing. Most of this older stuff is better than most of the new stuff that's being put out. As far as the vids, the production values aren't as good, but the material is great!

I for one am pleased that this has been issued on DVD. I had volume 1 of the Videotronics series, but not volume 2. Also studying off of DVD is a lot easier than tape as you don't have to continually rewind, you can slow it down, zoom in, freeze frame and step through certain moves frame by frame. I also can watch these at work on my computer during my lunch hour and work on moves at my computer at home and not tie up the TV. I generally do not like videos for learning effects but if I have to use them I think DVD is the way I will go from here on out.
By the way the Flip tape is great, hopefully they will release his stage magic tapes on DVD soon, if they haven't already.

For the money you pay, there is a lot of good stuff on here. I don't use much of it, but if you want to add some powerful ope magic to your act, I would recommend it. I will stick with Aldo's routine though.
