Dear fellow Café members,
Some of you might remember back in the 1970's, there was an effect called What's New. It was a cloth bag that, when thrown in the air, changed into a large colorful foulard. I can't for the life of me, find my original. I was wondering if anyone knows if this effect is still available. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much, Brian |

Brian,
Those came from Ted Suds (Sudbrack) and I still have a half dozen that I use often. They are much superior to any other blendo prop I have ever had at any price. I will PM the last phone number I had to get them. It is very old so it may be a deadend but it's all I can offer. Bob Magic By Sander |

Brian, if you browse through the silk or stage sections on the web sites of different magic stores, you will find versions of this effect. Usually the description of the effect involves a small bag in which the magician places a few silks and then it is instantly tranformed into a large silk or foulard. Sound familiar? If I have time, I will browse through some sites and post again with some links. Only thing is that I am not sure of the quality of the silk/foulard.
Actually, I just remembered that Hank Lee's does list it on their site. Whether or not they have it in stock is another thing. But contact them. Here is the link to this effect on their site: http://www.hanklee.org/xcart/customer/pr......p;page=1 Good luck! Jimmy

I have made some of these "Blendo Bags" up with Corporate logo silks on them. They are pretty easy to use.
The difference between the "Bongo" and "Suds" version is the placement of the pocket. Personally, I prefer the "Bongo" as the pocket is a the edge of the silk when revealed whereas the "Suds" is in the middle of the silk. Both work easy if you have reason for a bag and it is purely a matter of preference.

It hangs better, it shows less, it gives me better control, the vanished load doesn't fall (or fly) out, there is no "funny" shadow, and there is no right and wrong side. When they start showing wear, you just have the "handles" moved to the other two corners. I think I have seven that have worked hard for nearly a quarter of a century. Back when I got mine I was able to get matching Zombie cloths and also had a set made into a Devil's Hank. (I don’t really use that but I am keeping it for the matching "parts".) I have boxes of various Blendos. Most aren't bad, but they don't hold a candle to the What's New. What's New is not silk. In this product that is also a benefit. You need the weight to affect a smooth vanish of the bag and opening of the scarves. Opaqueness is also critical. Over the years I have vanished things as light as silks and as heavy as a genuine revolver in What's New with equal ease. Most of the Blendos on the market are only for a few silks. Plus the handles would rip out with a load like a can of Coke or whatever. I hate folding any of them. But it is certainly worth the results. I really like the What’s New. Bob Magic By Sander |

I guess I like the Bongo because I felt I had more control over the pocket in my hand rather than in the middle of the silk. As for the right and left side, the silk I made up was a message silk that had to be oriented in any event. I simply put a red pull loop and and blue pull loop.
But I agree the folding with any of them is a little hassle, especially if you are working alone. I have never felt all that comfortable with the unprepared blendo but I have used it on occasion. Yes most blendos need to be made with a minimum of 8 momme but 10 or higher is preferred. The non silk ones are fine for the What's New style but if you need to do the traditional style silk must be used.

Richard,
Red and blue loops! Great idea for keeping things facing the right way. As an old Navy guy, "Red Right Returning" was what I knew about navigation. Why wouldn't it work in magic? Bob Magic By Sander |

This information may be coming too late.
"What's New" was also published in one of the volumes of Rice's Encyclopedia of Silk Magic. Unfortunately, I can't remember which volume off the top of my head (I have the 4 volumes). I know its there, because I wanted one years ago, and ended up finding the plans in the book, and making it myself from bandanas. I think that Ickle Pickle may still have this item in their catalog, too, but I don't know of a website solely for their company. I remember seeing it years ago in their print catalog. - Donald

I hope some does still sell the original item. The size, weight, and load capacity make it a very practical untility prop for "house cleaning" before you finish your act. The advantage of Ted's is that doing it surrounded is no problem. Walk down stage and perform!
I like it for night club in the flat too! Bob Magic By Sander |
