Hi all.
I am looking for a review of Andrew Mayne's "License to Kill" effect that appears in his book Mind F/X. It's a license plate prediction effect. Thanks. --Scott

I haven't performed it, but it looks like a pretty strong effect. It's very simple in terms of methodology, but the presentation is memorable I think. When I first read through it, I thought you were actually producing the actual plate from the car of the spectator. After reading it through again, it can be any license plate. The more I thought about it though, using the plate from an actual spectator would DEFINITELY be memorable, though very risky. Maybe with a little preshow work you could select a spectator from the audience who wouldn't mind having their plate removed for an effect in your show? I think it would be very strong, as very few people I know actually know their own plate number. They might not even realize it when the plate is actually revealed. I think there could be some very interesting interaction with the spectator as you slowly reveal the kind of car it came from, and watch their reaction as they realize it came from their own car! If a person didn't want to risk damage to someone's car, a blown up photograph of the spectator's car would almost as effective I think. It would be cool to have 2 covers over the photo. The first would reveal the license plate, then by removing the second cover, it would reveal that it was actually the spectator's car. I think that would be a great double-whammy.
As is the case with all of Andrew's stuff, it's beauty lies in it's simplicity, and it is very open to personal presentation. I would recommend it along with all of the effects in MInd FX. |

I was in Las Vegas in January and noticed that one of the souvenier shops on The Strip located next to the Monte Carlo Hotel was selling old license plates from various states! At first, I thought they were just plastic reproductions. Closer inspection, though, revealed that the license plates were actually real plates from various states! They even had the current California license plate design! Of course, all the plates for sale were missing that particular state's registration stickers/tags (for those states that affix the tags to the license plate itself). I didn't know it was legal to sell real, old license plates like that, but I guess it is.
So, if you need a real license plate for this mentalism effect, you may want to check this out! I don't know if Vegas is the only place where souvenier shops sell these old license plates. But I do know that in my travels, I have never seen old license plates for sale like that anywhere else! |

I've seen old license plates in a souvenir shop in San Francisco...it was more of a touristy place on Fisherman's Wharf but they had some pretty cool stuff in there. I'm sure there are lots of places that have old license plates for sale, but stores that cater to tourists seem like a likely place to pick them up.

Thanks for the tip George! I knew that had to have been tried already since it popped into my head so quickly. I'll definitely have to visit his site!
