I was going to call my show mind games 10 years ago. In fact it was a friend that suggested it. It's probably the most obvious name for a mentalist show. I don't think anyone is copying anybody.

The truth is that you cannot copyright a title and Mind Games has been used for may years. I called my show that long before Marc did and because he used it on television we changed ours slightly to avoid confusion by switching the last s with a z. Long before that, Max Maven released a video titled Mind Games and there have been many others and most likely will be in the future too.

ESP Guy,

Regarding your statement, "Marc Paul is rumored to have ...," I think one must be careful of further spreading a rumor which may turn out to have no foundation. To quote one 1980s political appointee in the US after accusations about him were proven in court to have been groundless, "Where do I go to get my reputation back?"
Repeating a rumor and then following it up with, "it seems he's lifted the title Mind Games ..." without any evidence to back you up is, in my view, irresponsible and is certainly not an example of "magicians helping magicicans," the stated mission of The Magic Café.
For your information, moreover, Marc Paul is a longtime member (with Gold Star) of the Magic Circle in London.

Isn't the fact that Marc Salem has used it for years and it has become associated with him evidence enough? Marc Salem is very protective of that title as it has become associated with him. Just look at how many people on this thread thought Ian was initially commenting on Mr. Salem!

It is also my understanding that Max either asked for Marc's permission to use the title for his video, or, later aplogized for its use.

A number of people (including Gerry McCambridge and Alain Nu) have gone out of their way to ask their television producers NOT to use the title. Put yourself in Mr. Salem's position; how would like to have someone watch the Marc Paul special, and then Marc Salem returns to London for his theatre show, and people say, "Oh, I saw that crappy Mind Games special on tv. I don't want to pay money to see this guy."

Marc Pauls special was filmed about 8 or more years ago. My guess is it was the obvious choice for a title. I have read threads that cliam the blindfold and coins has become Marc Salem's trade mark and no one should copy him. I have seen similar acts in social clubs 20 years ago. (Marc does it exremely well though).

No one has outright ownership of anything. Mind Games has almost become synonomous with mentalism a laymans term. If I wanted to use it in a programme I offered I would. If you want to avoid that then you need a brand that cannot be separated from you. Mind Games can. Lay people will not know Mind Games being associated with anyone. More like a description of what you do..

Ideation just because Marc is a member of the magic circle GOLD STAR! does not mean he would not "lift" a routine or an idea (and I am in no way suggesting or insinuating he has or did). But I think its a blnkered view of magic & magicians if you think they don't deceive!!. do you think because Deren Brown says he doesn't use stooges he doesn't Smile. Magic history is rife with storys of world class magicians copying anothers routine. Im a qualified psychologist and carry a senior qualification in hypnotherapy. And I REALLY CAN READ MINDS !! Smile (im being ironic). Kreskin opens his show with linking finger rings and explains how hes not like other magicians and uses a ring with a slot and then promptly does so!. Membership of a body of deceivers does not imply you are above that nor add any degree of authority that you don't do those sort of things. Read hiding the Elephant by Jim steinmeyer its full of double dealings and deceit by ex presidents of the magic circle!

Who gives a flying feck what a show made 8 years ago was called. It was made. It's done and it's history. For gods sake Marc probably didn't even have any input as to the name. If I was offered a nice tv job then I wouldn't care what the hell they called it ( well apart from something like 'Magic Sucks II').

I believe that as a professional courtesy (emphasis on the word PROFESSIONAL) we should try our best to be original and stay away from titles, slogans, etc. that have become synonymous with another performer. As far as routines go, anything that's been in print is pretty much fair game. IMO.

I was not suggesting for one moment that anyone has stolen any names from anyone. I need a name for my show, and was just interested to know if I could use 'mind mysteries'. I think this has been taken out of proportion and context by Dark Knight, sorry for any confusion. Tom.

Derren Browns early specials were called "Mind Control".I have seen Marc Pauls series when it originally aired on some obscure satellite channel.I found some of the effects quite interesting, but the show format of four or five specs sat on stools rather boring.Marc's effects were rather good, and on the one occasion when he left the studio to do a blindfold drive, benefited greatly.

No doubt Marc Salem (who I've so far not had the pleasure of seeing perform) is, like Marc Paul, a wonderful performer. (Notice: I didn't stoop to putting Mr. Salem's work down as you did to Mr. Paul's.)
However, considering the fact that Marc Paul has already been the star of at least two of his own tv series in Great Britain, has appeared on many British tv shows (including Parkinson's, which apparently has something of a tradition of welcoming top mentalists, such as Chan Canasta and Marc Paul) and has put out a DVD, I think it's fair to say he's better-known amongst the public than Marc Salem and, thusly, it might be more likely for many to buy tickets intending to see Marc Paul but discover once the show starts that it's another "Marc" they're going to be seeing.
Whichever one it is - Marc Salem or Marc Paul -- I think it's safe to say they'd be in for a great mentalism performance in any case.

Hi Guys,

Firstly I was not aware that "Mind Games" was airing on Sky One. Can anyone give me more info?

Regarding the title....Mind Games was not my choice. The title was created by the shows producers and they came up with a few, all very clever in their opinion! One other title they suggested was "Theatre of the Mind". I suppose I would have been accused of stealing that from Barrie Richardson! Like some others have said "Mind Games" is a VERY obvious choice (In fact there is a quiz also on cable called "Mind Games").

My show was recorded in early 1999 and I was, at the time, completely unaware of Marc Salem. If I had known then that Salem uses "Mind Games" I personally would have insisted that the title of the show be changed. The reason, as some others have said, is so that there is no confusion in the public eye. Two mindreaders called Marc (with a c !) both with shows called "Mind Games" is completely stupid...why would I want my show called the same as someone elses. If you think that I would COPY someone elses show title YOU need your head examined. It would be insane! The unfortunate truth is a show I made 6 years ago is consantly repeating on the cable channels and some people think it is newer than it is, and this leads to confusion and comparisions to more recent shows. Yes you're right it's not the best show in the world, I would be the first to admit that. BUT I'm proud of it!

Let me give you an idea about what it's like to make a show like Mind Games. First of all no one on the production team was a magician, I brought my friend Anthony Owen in to help me with the show and at the time Anthony was just a mate, and not the high powered producer with Objective Productions that he is now. The original idea that the producers had was that I would do an effect and then the three contestants would try to figure out the method! So I obvoiusly had to move the show away from that and it became a discussion about what could be real and what was deception. Far more interesting in my opinion. Luckily the producers went for it. The budget of the show was exceedingly low and the turn round exceedingly fast. I got the job and the next week we started filming. The aim was to film FOUR, yes FOUR shows a night! I only managed this once. The rest of the time we got either 3 or 2 in the can. Never did I have the luxury of refilming any piece. They where all first takes!!!!!!! In fact I do my effect Syncronicity Pack and you can clearly see duplicate cards. I asked to refilm this one trick and was refused! So as you can understand Mind Games is not as good as it could have been. If I made it now of course it could be better, I would insist on more control that's for certain!

So yes I'm proud of what I managed to achieve. 16 x 30 min shows, that's 64 routines. All filmed in about 2 weeks, with little or no reheasal for no budget and with no chance to do retakes! A show that 6 years later is still constantly on Tv and being discussed on a forum in 2005!

On one final note, what would you do if you had to fulfil the brief of Mind Games, would you go for it and grow as a performer, or would you put your tail between your legs and turn it down?

You know what I did...and it put hairs on my chest!!

Best thoughts

Marc Paul

PS For the nth time, my AAA Booktest was created by me in 1998. You can see it on Mind Games. It is not copied, stolen or ripped off from any other performer.

Hehe! I have just stumbled into this thread so I thought I would throw my cat amongst the pigheads.

I laughed as I read, in jest of course, all these people saying I am going to call my show this and that, I would do this in my TV special. I laugh when I read these attacks against other performers - usually wrapped up in the phrase 'They put themselves in the public eye, it is our right to pull them apart'.

The fact is they have the TV show and many of the vocal parties don't. The green eyed swamp beast strikes again maybe? Here is a novel idea - If you find yourself disliking someone in the public eye why not offer your constructive criticism directly to them with your explanations as to why. That way they can tell you to go **** yourself in a private email.

People seem so pre-occupied with looking for the negative that they fail to see the positive. I have the view that if you can talk up a better game, yet you don't deliver it then you are no better than the person you are trying to put down. Sure, there will be the usual responses of 'I could have a TV show if I wanted to' or 'I keep getting approached but I turn them down' or even worse 'I had a TV show in 1967'.

I suggest that those that vociferously put down others should go out and actually make the better show they keep insisting is out there and then come back and say 'look how great I am and how rubbish you are'.
