I just received both the James Riser mini cups and both of the Dennis Loomis chop cups. They make a wonderful addition to a working performer's collection or a magic collector's display. The cups themselves are of the highest quality possible and a real pleasure to own and perform with.
The mini cups are just the right size and weight and handle very well. They stack beautifully and despite the small size, the top of the cup can accommodate three 7/8" balls at once so all of your favorite classic moves are still possible. The only drawback is that you do not receive a carrying bag or even a set of cheap balls. Correct me if I'm wrong but this is something I think most magicians would come to expect from a set this elegant. Amazingly, the chop cup and it's balls can all be carried around with ease in the very same pocket. The silver cup is slightly smaller than the copper cup. When I first received them I couldn't believe how small the micro chop cups we're and didn't think I'd be able to perform with them but after working with them for just a few minutes I quickly realized how well they handled in the hand or on a table. In my opinion; however, the sets of balls that I received with the cups we're either too small or too big to be used as final loads so I drove up to my local Wal-Mart super center and cruised through the toy isle and found some balls with jacks that just happened to be the exact size I was looking for. They we're also more attractive considering they we're semi transparent in blue and pink with color collages in the middle. In conclusion, money well spent for props that will undoubtedly last a lifetime! |

I've got mine for 2 months now and have been performing it at some party's. When you arrive at a table say: Just wait for a moment, I'll take a drink first, they don't even realize the routine has started.
Fantastic. No other words. |

Of course, I'd want a "barrel" design (with a flat bottom panel rather than having the sides merely stitched together at the bottom). I've Googled, but can't find a source. PM me if you have any info, please!

I'd like to correct some potential confusion here. Even the original title of this thread got it wrong.
The Jim Riser Mini cups and Balls set is a set of three cups for doing a standard cups and balls routine. They are only available directly from Jim Riser. He sells balls, but you must select either a crochet set or his special knotted balls and yes, there's a charge for the balls. He does not supply a bag for the cups. Nor does he provide a routine or instructions, since so much is already out there on the Cups and Balls. The price for the cups is reasonable and fair. The price for the balls is also reasonable and fair. Obviously I'm not the only one that thinks so, because Jim has more orders than he can keep up with and to get a set you need to be put on the waiting list. The Riser/Loomis MICRO Chop cup is a different product entirely. It is a tiny Chop cup, available (so far) in two styles; stainless steel or copper. They come with a set of three balls. (two gaffed, one regular.) They also come with my instruction booklet which explains in detail my unique routine for the Micro Chop Cup. The MICRO Chop Cup comes with a drawstring velour bag. If you like, there are various accessories which you can purchase when you originally get the cup(s) or individually later. This is available either from Jim Riser or from myself. Either way, I do the packing and shipping. Jim makes the cups and the small balls, I make the other gaffs and provide the other accessories, including the final load balls. Alas, the company which makes the bags for the Micro Chop Cup does not make them in larger sizes as would be needed for Jim's assorted 3-cup sets. Dennis Loomis http://www.loomismagic.com

Riser's workmanship is fantastic. Dennis' routine great. I am looking forward to supplementing my set with the gold plate cup.
I heard that Riser was asked to do a run of Don Alan Chop Cups by the holder of rights to that design, but that he turned it down. It would be nice to see that big mouth design return in a high quality metal cup. C'mon Jim! |

Jim does eventually plan to release a large sized chop cup. He has advertised one prototype on his website for some time, but the final release will likely be different. Unfortunately, the man is very busy with orders that patience will be needed. I, too, look forward to grabbing a limited edition gold plated MICRO chop cup when it's released.

Yes, Jim does plan, ultimately, to release a "standard" size chop cup. But he is swamped with work. For one thing, the sales of the Micro Chop cups have exceeded our expectations and it's keeping him pretty busy just trying to keep up with the orders. He also has regular orders for his other cups, for the McAbee Rings, and for custom work. On top of that, he's working on his design for a gravity holdout, and other items.
As I type, the first prototype for the Large Size Chop cup is sitting on my desk. The look and weight are "to die for" but alas, Jim and I agree that some changes have to be made to increase it's functionality. That redesign and his other work prevents a release date any time soon. However, it's a tribute to Jim's craftsmanship that he will not release an item until it is, by his standards, practically perfect in every way. (Thank you Mary Poppins.) The hold up on the gaffed coins for the Coin Cup and on the Gold Plated version is because we are waiting for Doug Brewer to finish his new book on coin cup work. Those of you that know Doug know that the wait is worth while. The Gold Cups will only come as a complete outfit including the Gold Plated Sacagewea Coins and gaff, a gold plated knock out disk, and a standard set of balls as well as the balls for Aldo Colombini's Laser Cup Routine. I apologize for the delay, but not for our decision to hold off introduction of any new cups or accessories until the quality matches that of the original release. Dennis Loomis http://www.loomismagic.com Boy, I really screwed up. Someone from Japan sent me a Private Message, I quickly scanned it and was looking to see if there was an email address for the sender. But, I accidently clicked on the delete folder. This person wanted to know if I had a set of both of the Micro Chops in stock right now. I do. Their last name started with a T, I believe, but I'm not entirely sure. If you are that person, or know who it might be, please let me know. Dennis Loomis http://www.loomismagic.com deloomis@mindspring.com

I still perform the micro chop cup routine regularly. It has remained a staple in my close-up repertoire for years now.

This thread has inspired me to revisit this premium chop cup. Practice last night reminded me of quality that is sometimes lost with the "hype of the day". Enjoy sharing your magic. cheaha bill
