I was looking on ebay and found a cagethat was 18L x 18w x 61H(inches). Is that big enough for two doves?
Please reply and if it isn't the right size tell me a good size for two doves.

The bigger the better! it also depends on the doves some doves like people just don't get along and they will be fighting the entire time, the big problem is if they are figthing all the time they are going to look ratty from pulling each others feathers, then they start flapping in the feathers fly every were! if that is a problem you should keep them in seperate cages! a big thing is letting them out once in a while to spread there wings and fly around(I would reccomend only doing this after you have removed the food from the cage for a few hours before hand to minimize the bombing runs) letting them out gives them excercise and cures the "cabin fever"!
back to the question LOL I have a cage that is 19 by 19 by 24 high and kept 2 doves in it for years and they had more then enough room!

Sounds like a good cage to me. Macmagic has some good advice. You should handle and exercise your doves daily. That's especially true if you are not doing shows every day, because if you handle them daily they are less likely to take off during the show. I made a perch out of an old music stand and used to let them out every day. They would preen themselves every morning on the perch.
Plus, it means you will not have to clip their wings, which you should never do anyway because not only does it make them look bad, it can be dangerous for the bird. Regarding the fighting, I only had a problem when I kept two males together with a female. They would fight over the female. If I kept them separated by pairs, all way well. Jim |

I suggest a cage that is long and wide, but not too high. Doves need room to walk. They do not enjoy headroom as much as legroom. I would suggest going to Petsmart and getting a dog cage. This is a metal cage which folds flat and has a large drawer for cleaning the paper.
I have one set (4 birds) of my birds in a cage like this. I think the size is about L 38" X W 20" X H 20. I spent about $52 on it. The cage I have in Europe is a rabbit cage I picked up at the thrift store. It has a large high-sided plastic bottom and is 39" X 20" X 19." I actually like this one the best. Where are you planning to keep them? Inside? Outside? Since you sound like a new dove worker, I will suggest that you watch out for ceiling fans when you perform. Have the people turn them off or you will be paying big bucks for therapy for the birthday kid after the veg-o-matic fan vanishes your dove! There is a lot to know about birds. Try to do some reading. Your birds will thank you Let me know if you have a question. I have inadvertantly become an expert. I have had birds since I have been a kid.

Yea also what I used to do is if I was working in my office, the doves had a perch right next to me(music stand as well) and if I would leave the office which is in my house to go get a glass of water etc. I would get a bird on my finger walk out get my water walk back and put him back on the perch, this really got them to the point were they wanted to be on my hand, if I walked out with out them they would fly after me, I would just hold my hand out and they would land, its pretty cool! The more you handle them they less likely they will try to fly away!
I would reccomend a book by Tony Clark, can not remember the name of it but he teaches you how to get your doves to fly right back to ya, it works good!

If you want to drive down to Memphis, I can tell you where to find birds there. Otherwise, you can attend the local IBM or SAM and find out who is a dove worker. Most magicians have an extra pair or a new pair they can hatch for you.
If this is not an option, look in the Tulsa phone book or online and find the local racing pigeon club. Contact their president and find out of any of them raises white doves. Don't get brown or speckled doves because they always seem wilder than the white ones. Go with a mated pair, a male and female. They mate for life so try to keep them together for life. They will lay eggs (always a pair) a couple of times a month. You want to discard these eggs immediately, because when they hatch (and they WILL hatch) you will have a new male and a female. The males will always fight and tear each other's feathers out. Here are some suggestions that may be helpful: Fresh water daily is a must. I feed my birds a mixture of wild bird seed and pigeon mix. I also crush up dried chicken egg shells and put it in their food for calcium. I give them grit which are tiny rocks the size of aquarium gravel. They need this every day with their food. A feed store would have everything you need. Your birds would also love (finely chopped) raw broccoli and carrots on occasion. They also love the occasional boiled egg that is also finely chopped. (Remove the excess fresh food after about an hour.) Get a see-through lace cover for their cage (go to the fabric store and ask for some lacy material to cover a bird cage). Keep the cover on there at all times. This keeps the dust and feathers to a minimum. The birds will go through feather shedding at times, so keep a vaccume handy. When you clean the cage, try not to breathe the dust from the dried dove poo. You can catch histoplasmosis (A nasty lung fungus) if you aren't careful. They also coo loudly. Some magicians just love the sound. Your neighbors may not. Good luck I am happy to answer any future questions you have.
