David Regal's magic is starting to interest me. What do you guys think of Volume 1 in his DVD set "The Magic of David Regal"? 'There and Back' and the 'DejaVu Deck' seem like really cool effects, but you obviously have to construct the gimmicks yourself. How difficult are they to make?
Other than that, are the rest of the effects in volume 1 any good?

In my mind David Regal has created some of the most impressive effects I have ever witnessed.
I use his effects alot - the de ja vu deck and there and back being my favourites - and these are the ones that tend to get the best reactions. I bought the de ja vu deck not too long ago. I thought, "aw, maybe I shouldn’t have bought this. after all, it’s just another rough & smooth deck." I reluctantly tried it out at a festival I went to, it got a better reaction than I have ever had from an invisible deck effect. I was more startled than the spectator, I think. "No way!" they yelled", are the rest of those cards still blank?" they were. I suppose it becomes more appealing because the magic supposedly happens in the spectators’ hands. They like that, I think. and as for ’there and back’. I saw this demonstrated in a magic store. "how?" I thought? I had no clue, I did not hesitate in buying it. All in all, I do not have a bad word to say about David Regal. Everything of his I have seen or performed myself has been exquisite. I do not own the videos, but they are certainly within the top five of my "magic things to buy" list. Get the videos. Alternatively, ask people’s opinion of the videos in ’the good, the bad, and th garbage section’. I’ve no doubt a few people here already own them. Gonz _________________ Never argue with a fool. He may be doing the same thing. Ah, it would appear you DID ask in ’the good, the bad, and the garbage section’ I don’t know what lead me to believe I was somewhere else... what must you think of me...?

I think the three volume set of David Regal videos occupies one of the loftier places in magic purchases, i.e., that the vast majority of people who purchase the videos are more than happy with them. I have not heard anyone say that they did not find several refreshingly strong but relatively simple effects from this series.

I own vol. 1 & 3 of this series.
It is very good. I recommend it very highly. The effects are strong and the methods are so simple, it makes it fun for a beginner like me. The performance is something you can watch over and over. Good luck Mark |

I like David Regal very much. I have his book "Close-Up and Personal and Vol 1 of his video series. Apart from the content being excellent the quality of production is also superb.

Magicians all have their likes and dislikes. I saw Regal for the first time at the last Convention at the Capitol. I found his presentation so irritating that I couldn't sit through his acts (several acts during the convention). It was like watching the archetypal obnoxious teenage magician grown to middle age.
In contrast, I absolutely loved John Carney. His Mr. Mysto was the high point of the convention for me - with the possible exception of his lecture. |

His recent DVD/Video release is well worth the price. Some routines may require some sleight-of-hand, but not too advanced. Regal is creative, and his plots can be quite funny.

All three tapes/dvd's contain excellent material. Whilst some might not be fond of David's performing style, don't let that keep you from the excellent magic contained on the tapes...

Get the first DVD, Cardguy! It has both of those routines and it has Self-Evident too!
Like Stephen, I think the Deja Vu Deck is fantastic. It is easy to make. There and Back is a bit more difficult to construct.

The new Constant Fooling books (two of them) by David Regal have lots of great material in them.
But what's really instructive is seeing his presentations. At the core of each trick is an original idea, fleshed out with good lines that all relate to the theme and plot, and the result is a really coherent performance. I've noticed that many top pro's all work this way. A great presentation is much more important to them than a new trick or sleight. In David Regal's case, you get both. Jerry |

The is a favorable review at magictalk reviews for Regal's 3 volume set. I personally liked his presentations as well as his magic. One of the better purchases I've made in the last few years. There & Back is a killer but you will need to construct a gimmick that may be a headache to get right. David gimmicks a lot of things in the first two videos. I don't mind making gimmicks/props but There & Back was a little too much work for me. Other great routines are: Self Evident, Everywhere, Cheating, Moving Hole, For Marlo, Triple Vision, Flight of Fancy, the list could go on.

It's funny about taste in presentations. I remember all the comments about Bruce Cervon after the Vernon videos he made came out, along the lines of obnoxious and irritating. Some similar comments on Darwin Ortiz. I like their presentations very much, as I do Regal's. They are well-crafted and THE EFFECT IS ALWAYS CLEAR. The obnoxiousness is clearly a character and a put-on, so in my mind entertaining.

Regal is just in character when he performs, that's all. His explainations are very good. You can see how he could do these effects dryly but they wouldn't be the same. He likes to bring out the spectators personally, which in turns makes it more personal. Makes good magic to me! I do admit that I wasn't taken to him at first, but sometimes a repeat watching will open your eyes. It is not easy to be filmed and come across as charming as you think you are. Try filming yourself performing, it is a real reality check . I know was humbled. 2 cents worth from here.
Not clever enough to come up with something orginal, or did I.

I was hesitant to buy at first, for some reason, his first set of videos (maybe the packaging?). But I was hooked since.
Any rumours on when his new videos will be out? |

I was actually sorry when he starting putting out videos, because many are unfamiliar with his material from Star Quality, which has been OOP for a long while and contains some absolute gems. I've fried some well read friends with some of his stuff. Now his videos and DVD's are making him better known.

David is a creative genius. And... He is SUPER nice and a joy to order from.
OK, we're both from New York. But I'd be just as supportive if I was from Sri Lanka.

What amazes me if his patters and stories leading into the effect. Some of them, only he call pull it off because of his character. I can say that all of his patters are really really well thought out.

David Regal is one of those magicians that I have yet to see publish anything even mediocre... Everything so far has been absolutely superb. I still rate his both Dvd series to the top 10 of all time magic dvd´s and I have must seen way over 1000 DVD´s and VHS´s. Pretty much all material is practical, well presented, fun to watch just for entertainment and most will also fool the pants out of you. To summary it all, two words, GET EM!
