Personally I practice every free moment I have. While watching tv. when waiting in the drive thru at a fast food joint, at work when its slow. I try to practice as much as possible.

I try to practice whenever possible - I just posted elsewhere (hmm... should be practicing...) that I learned a couple of sleights commuting to and from work. I usually do an hour or so a day, though spread out during it.

If it is manipulation I will do it when I have free time. I aklso use it in my practice so I get to perform almost daily M-F. If it is part of my show I keep in practice by continuing to do shows. If it is a routine I am working through I will often run it over in my mind. Sounds crazy but research has shown that it still produces good results. Some of my best patter and routines were developed while cutting the lawn. Go figure.

For impromptu and close up I practice sleights anywhere 20 minutes to an hour a day. basically, when time permits.
For complete routines I usually spend a couple of hours on weekends. For living room and bigger stuff I admittedly don't spend enough time. Usually only a couple of times a month for a couple of hours. That's bad I know but it's sort of new to me and I'm still trying sort things out in my chaotic mind. |

Whenever I feel like it or have time so it varies. Actually, results come from focussed practice. Ie quality not quantity. So, saying you spend x hours a day is kind of meaningless. You could achieve a lot more progress on a move by say 1/2 an hour and keep on coming back to it for 6 days in a row than doing the same move for 3 hours one day.
Also, quality in the fact of doing the right things. Keep on checking back on the instructions and critically review how the action looks as compared to the unfaked action. You may effect an almost perfect move with a slight finger wiggle which will telegraph the move. If the finger wiggle was in your muscle memory from the start, a lot of that practice was bad practice. Admittedly, some moves are so difficult that you may have get the basics and then irradicate other movement as you work them up, but if you can start right but slow, so much the better. |

Thanks guys, right now I'm working on the marlow twist, and practise in front of the mirror with it for maybe 30 mins, and then hit the books again(school haha), and come back for another 30 mins with the mirror. Got it down pretty good, but I want perfection! Thanks guys!!

Imagination is more powerfull than knowledge..of course you need to practice but what I do when I don't have time is I just run it in my head..i imagine where my hands should be..what I should say..to details you know..when I have free time than I practice it out..and repair my mistakes..this helps you to be more creative and you can create ur own style..well I hope wat I'm doing is ok..if no please tell me..

The more you you use concentrated practice the more comfortable you'll become with the given effect. I don't feel that there is a magic number of hours needed. Assuming that you are practicing a routine rather than just a sleight,I generally begin by practicing the technical mechanics until I can do them without the slightest thought. I then write out my patter and memorize it. After that I put them together and lo and behold I have a piece ready to show the masses. After several audience demos I can begin polishing the effect until it is a masterpiece.

I would practise at least 2 hrs a day.
It used to be fun but nowadays, I think its a kinda discipline thingy to make myself sit at a table and go through the same sleights countless times I think practising with full concentration and practising while perhaps watching TV or some each has its uses. Sometimes practising in front of a TV can help me take the attention away from my hands and this is what I need most when I perform But for cups and balls, I guess I don have a choice..its back at the tables!! cheerios

There are a lot of good answers and some humorous ones and some that are very practical and some not so.
I am constantly working on material so I guess I could say I practice every waking moment, but that wouldn't be exactly true, there are other things in life besides magic. For Sleights and technical work I practice as long as it requires to become proficient. Naturally the sleights I use most often get the most work, but even things that are in hiatus get a touch now and again. Mental practice, scripting and working out routines, get the most work when I'm driving or doing chores. I keep most of my material and scripts memorized, my lines are part of my internal dialog so I would say that my weakness is in that I don’t keep many notes. Actual rehearsal depends on how much I'm working. If I'm really busy doing shows, not as much, if I have down time I rehearse more often.
